Research guide

This research guide is a guide to general sources of industry information. It encompasses both print resources available at the Business Information Centre as well as electronic and Internet resources.

For sources of company information, consult the pathfinders, Canadian Company Information and Company Information – United States/International.

For sources of industry ratios, consult the pathfinder, Financial Ratios. For sources of information on specific industries, consult the BIC catalogue or ask at the Reference Desk.


Industry Profiles

  • DBRS (Dominion Bond Rating Service) Industry studies
  • CD-ROMs available at Ref Desk

    Canadian industry analyses, which include background information, statistical data, and trends. Reports on key players in the industry with extensive tables are also provided.

  • FP Advisor
  • Provides an in-depth analysis of 33 industries in which top 750 publicly traded Canadian companies compete. Organized by Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS®)

  • Standard & Poors NetAdvantage
  • Provides analysis of more than 50 industry sectors, with a U.S. bias. Each industry profile includes such information as industry overview, trends, statistics, a comparative analysis of the key players in the industry, and a listing of key associations and trade journals.

  • Investext Plus
  • Provides access to research from over 450 investment banks and 150 trade associations worldwide.

  • Mergent Online
  • Key financial information, operating data, and ratios for approximately 4,000 companies (primarily U.S.). Information is arranged by industry group, allowing companies to be compared with each other, as well as against industry averages.

  • Industry Canada (formerly Strategis)
  • Provides a variety of information, including Business Information by Sector and Strategis Guides to Researching Markets, which allows the building of reports from a variety of sources, both Canadian and international.

  • Value Line Investment Survey
  • Access via BIC workstations #1 and #2 only. Ask the Reference Desk staff to log on. Provides brief analyses on a wide range of U.S. industries. Updated weekly

Statistics

  • CANSIM (Statistics Canada)
  • Provides access to the data series from which many of the Statistics Canada publications are derived.

  • International Trade Association
  • Provides trade statistics for the U.S. Of special note is the U.S. Industry Sector Data section under Products and Activities.

  • Statistics Canada
  • Statistics Canada collection

    The BIC is a partial depository library for Statistics Canada. The full collection is available in Data, Map and Government Information Services in the Robarts Library. To locate statistics and reports, consult the Statistics Canada website or ask at the Reference Desk.

  • Statistical Resources on the Web
  • (University of Michigan Documents Center)

    Provides links to a variety of statistics available on the Internet. Arranged by category.

    Data, Map and Government Information Services in the Robarts Library also houses a collection of Canada, U.S., and international government statistics.

Industrial Classification Codes

Much industry information is organized using the North American Industry Classification (NAIC) system, officially adopted in 1997. This system is being slowly phased in for use in all public and private data collection, but many commercial databases and sources continue to use SIC codes.

Associations

Industry and trade associations are a rich source of information for industry statistics and information.

    A directory of over 20,000 associations in Canada. Searchable by association name, subject, geographic location, etc.

Journal and Newspaper Articles

Journal and newspaper articles are an excellent source of industry information. Please consult the pathfinder Doing Business Research Using EIR [ add link] for details.

  • Provides access to full text articles from journals and periodicals.

  • Database provides access to articles from more than 10,000 journals, periodicals and newspapers from around the world.

  • Provides access to full text articles from newspapers, journals and periodicals, including scholarly and peer-reviewed journals, trade publications and Hoovers Company Records,
