New Faculty Appointed at UofT’s Rotman School of Management

September 11, 2014

Toronto – Seven faculty have been appointed at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management for the 2014/15 academic year in the areas of finance, marketing, organizational behaviour and human resource management,  operations management, and strategic management.

“The new faculty all have an extremely strong track record of research and teaching at some of the world’s leading educational institutions and we look forward to the contributions they will be making to the life of the Rotman School in the coming years,” says Joel Baum, professor of strategic management and associate dean, faculty, at the Rotman School.

After spending two years as a visiting professor at the Rotman School, Will Mitchell will be a professor of strategic management and will also continue to hold the Anthony S. Fell Chair in New Technologies and Commercialization. He studies business dynamics in developed and emerging markets, investigating how businesses change as their competitive environments change and, in turn, how business changes contribute to ongoing corporate and social performance. Prof. Mitchell teaches courses in corporate strategy, emerging market strategy, entrepreneurial strategy, and pharmaceutical and other health sector strategy.

Kevin Bryan comes to the Rotman School as an assistant professor of strategic Management. He received his PhD at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. His research primarily consists of applied theoretical analyses of innovation. At present, he is particularly interested in questions related to which research lines inventors and firms pursue, and in how "directional inefficiency" in these choices can be mitigated.

Olivier Dessaint comes to the Rotman School as an assistant professor of finance. He has a PhD in finance from HEC Paris, which he decided to pursue after working as an investment banker. His research interests include corporate finance, behavioural finance, mergers & acquisitions, and investment banking.

Laura Doering will be an assistant professor of strategic management. She is completing a PhD in sociology and business administration at the University of Chicago. Her research examines how social factors influence processes of economic development in emerging markets. She focuses on how low-income individuals act as entrepreneurs and use non-traditional financial tools, such as microfinance and mobile banking.

Matthew Feinberg joins the Rotman School as an assistant professor of organizational behavior and human resources management.  He completed his PhD in social psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and post-doctoral studies at Stanford Graduate School of Business. His research explores the underlying psychological processes that lead individuals to join together to form cohesive groups and collectives, with a particular focus on morality and political attitudes.

Gonzalo Romero comes to the Rotman School as an assistant professor of operations management. He is completing a PhD in operations management from MIT’s Sloan School of Management.  His research interests include humanitarian operations management, healthcare and supply chain management and he has a particular interest in subsidy allocation problems.

Ryan Webb will be an assistant professor of marketing.  He completed a PhD in Economics from Queen’s University, and a research fellowship at the Center for Neuroeconomics at New York University. His research integrates the disciplines of neuroscience, psychology, and economics to provide insight into consumer behaviour. Recent research includes developing empirical models to predict consumer choices using state-of-the-art neural measurement techniques (fMRI and EEG), and examining “choice-set effects” on behaviour derived from the principles for how the brain encodes sensory information.

Seven more faculty who have been hired by the Department of Management at either the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) or the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) will also be cross-appointed to the Rotman School.

Pat Akey will be an assistant professor of finance at UTM.

Cindy Chan will be an assistant professor of marketing at UTSC.

Andre Cire will be an assistant professor of operations management at UTSC.

Jacob Hirsh continues at UofT as an assistant professor of organizational behavior and human resource management at UTM.

Peter Landry will be an assistant professor of marketing at UTM.

Nan Li will be an assistant professor of accounting at UTSC.

Kirstina Steffenson McElheran will be an assistant professor of strategic management at UTSC.

As previously announced, Prof. Malia Mason of Columbia Business School will be a visiting professor as the first recipient of “The Award for Emerging Leaders in Honour of Dean Roger Martin.”

Earlier this year the Financial Times ranked the faculty 9th in the world for academic research for the second consecutive year among global business schools. Further details on faculty and research at the Rotman School are online at www.rotman.utoronto.ca/FacultyAndResearch/Faculty.aspx.
