Rotman ICPM Board Effectiveness Program for Pension Organizations Launches Two New Offerings.

November 12, 2014

Toronto – The next two classes of the Board Effectiveness Program (BEP), jointly developed by the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and the Rotman International Centre for Pension Management (Rotman ICPM), will be offered this coming December and again in February. A limited number of places are still available in each offering.

Considered to be the world’s leading governance education program for board members of pension and other long-horizon investment institutions,  BEP addresses the board’s role in key strategic issues including – organizational design and mission, fiduciary duties, board dynamics, human resource management and compensation, investment beliefs, risk management, and the role of the board versus management. The week-long program is designed to develop the Board’s ability and capacity to navigate the growing complexities of the sector and improve business processes while maintaining the sustainability of the pension arrangement.

The program is taught by internationally acclaimed leaders in governance, management, and pension design, including Keith Ambachtsheer, director emeritus of Rotman ICPM; Eileen Mercier, Board Chair of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan; Rob Bauer, professor of finance at Maastricht University and executive director of Rotman ICPM, as well as by a number of top-flight members of Rotman School faculty.

The previous four offerings brought together a total of 128 participants from 52 pension organizations in 11 different countries.

“The program offers effective research, practical solutions, group networking, training sessions and access to skilled professionals, both academic and business, to guide the learning,” says Bob Scheuber, Former Board Chair, QSuper (Australia).

“The Board Effectiveness Program gave me new insights both from the academic presentations and the stimulating case study discussions. Here in Sweden, I have started to implement some ideas to increase the efficiency of the board that I chair,” noted Urban Karlström, Board Chair, Första AP-fonden (Sweden).
