New Collaboration Announced between Leaders in Design Thinking.

December 17, 2014

Toronto – Having been in conversation about how design thinking can impact the world of business for over 12 years, two leaders of the field, Tim Brown and Roger Martin, have announced a new collaboration.

Tim Brown, CEO and president of IDEO, a global design and innovation firm, will serve as Design Advisor to the Martin Prosperity Institute (MPI) at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Tim will work with MPI to design interventions that will contribute to its goal of enhancing the future of democratic capitalism.

Roger Martin, former Dean of the Rotman School and current Premier’s Chair in Productivity & Competitiveness and Academic Director of the MPI, will serve as IDEO’s Strategy Advisor. Roger will help IDEO in its work to bring design thinking to the improvement of large scale human systems.

Tim Brown frequently speaks about the value of design thinking and innovation to business people and designers around the world. An industrial designer by training, he has earned numerous design awards and has exhibited work at the Axis Gallery in Tokyo, the Design Museum in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He takes special interest in the convergence of technology and the arts, as well as the ways in which design can be used to promote the well-being of people living in emerging economies.  Brown advises senior executives and boards of global Fortune 100 companies. He is a member of the board of trustees of IDEO.org and serves on the Mayo Clinic Innovation Advisory Council and the Advisory Council of Acumen, a non-profit global venture focused on improving the lives of the poor. In addition he chairs the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on the Creative Economy and writes for the Harvard Business Review, The Economist, and other prominent publications.

Roger Martin is former Dean and current Premier’s Chair in Productivity & Competitiveness and Academic Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the Rotman School of Management. He has published eight books, including Playing to Win (with A.G. Lafley), which received the Thinkers 50 book award, for being the most significant contribution to management thinking in 2012-2013. In 2013, He placed 3rd on the Thinkers50 list, a biannual ranking of the most influential global business thinkers.  He also serves as a strategic advisor to the CEOs of a number of companies, including P&G, Lego, Verizon and Steelcase.

A discussion between Brown and Martin, Capitalism Needs Design Thinking, was recently posted to IDEO.com and MartinProsperity.org.
