New Leadership Team Appointed at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.

Toronto – A new leadership team has been named at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Four new vice-deans will assume their roles over this spring and summer.
 
“The new structure better reflects the School’s significant growth in recent years and its ambitions for greater impact and effectiveness across all programs and initiatives,” says Dean Tiff Macklem, who joined the School last year.
 
Prof. Peter Pauly, who served as Vice Dean, has stepped down and will return to the Business Economics area as a full time professor.
 
“I am tremendously grateful to Prof. Pauly for his outstanding leadership at the Rotman School and his guidance this past year,” adds Macklem.
 
Prof. Susan Christoffersen has been named Vice Dean, Undergraduate and Pre-Experience Programs, for a term from July 1 to June 30, 2020. In this new role she will be responsible for Rotman Commerce, the school’s undergraduate management program, and a number of potential new pre-experience programs that the School is looking to introduce in the future.
 

Prof. Kenneth Corts will be Vice Dean, Faculty and Research, for a term from March 31 to June 30, 2020. In this role he will be responsible for faculty tenure and promotions, the Rotman School’s research institutes, the PhD program and resources and facilities for the School.

Prof. Brian Golden has been named Vice Dean, Professional Programs, for the period from March 31 to June 30, 2020.  In this new role he will be responsible for the Full-Time MBA, Morning and Evening MBA, Executive MBA, Omnium Global Executive MBA, and the Master in Finance program, which are the School’s post-experience programs in highly competitive and rapidly evolving markets.

Prof. Mihnea Moldoveanu has been named Vice Dean, Learning and Innovation, for the period from March 31 to June 30, 2018. In this new role, he will have the mandate to put the Rotman School at the forefront of innovative learning and education by focusing on curricular innovation across all programs, the design of new programs, opportunities and strategy for on-line learning.
 
In addition, Prof. Moldoveanu will be responsible for Rotman Executive Education Programs, which provides specialized business education programs for individual and group learners which address today’s business challenges and opportunities.
 
Four new directors, including an academic director of the Rotman Full Time MBA and a director of the Rotman PhD program, have also been named.
 
Prof. Stéphane Côté has been appointed Director of the PhD Program, for a three-year term effective July 1.
 
Prof. Mara Lederman has been appointed Director, Research Resources and Centres, for a three-year term effective July 1.
 
Prof. Jan Mahrt-Smith has been appointed to a three-year term as Academic Director, Full Time MBA program, effective March 31.
 
Prof. Joanne Oxley has been appointed to a three-year term as Director of Faculty Recruiting, effective July 1.
 
Susan Christoffersen is an Associate Professor of Finance at the Rotman School. She has a track record of excellent service as an academic administrator, through her previous role as the MBA Academic Director/Coordinator at McGill University prior to joining the Rotman School in 2010. She is an outstanding teacher and communicator, and has a record of mentoring and close involvement with the student body. Her research focuses on mutual funds and the role of financial institutions in capital markets. She has published in top finance journals and cited in The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Bloomberg News Service, and The Wall Street Journal. She has won numerous research awards from Q-Group, Bank of Canada, BSI Gamma Foundation, INQUIRE, and the Swiss Finance Institute.
 
Kenneth Corts is a Professor of Business Economics and was the Associate Dean, Undergraduate, where he led the revitalization of the Rotman Commerce program. He has championed major curriculum innovations, introduced new extracurricular activities, and created a vastly expanded focus on admissions and career services. He also has strong teaching and research credentials. His research focuses on the application of microeconomics and game theory to business strategy, contracting, organizational design, competition policy, and technology adoption. He has served as Editor of the Journal of Industrial Economics, testified as an expert witness for the Canadian Competition Bureau, and authored several Harvard Business School case studies used at leading schools around the world. He joined the Rotman School in 2003 and has served in his current role as Associate Dean and Rotman Commerce Director since 2009.
 
Brian Golden is a Professor of Strategic Management and the holder of the Sandra Rotman Chair in Health Sector Strategy at the Rotman School and the University Health Network. In this role he has created and led the Health Sector Management stream in the School’s MBA programs --- the leading health sector business school program in Canada. He has also successfully led a broad range of health sector-oriented Executive Education Programs. His research is in the areas of strategic change and implementation, health system integration and funding, organizational strategy, and leadership. He has a strong publication record in the top journals of his field. Since 2006, he has served as Executive Director of the Collaborative for Health Sector Strategy, a policy, research, and leadership development initiative funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health.  In that role he has been a valuable advisor to government. He also has significant administrative experience within the Rotman School, having led various strategic initiatives, including the development of The Judy Project, the school’s flagship program for executive women, and served as Area Coordinator of the Strategic Management Area.
 
Mihnea Moldoveanu is Professor of Business Economics, Desautels Professor of Integrative Thinking and Director of the Desautels Centre for Integrative Thinking and the Mind Brain Behaviour Hive. He was the Associate Dean, Full-Time MBA Program from 2010 until now.  He has a proven track record of implementing curricular reform in the Full-Time MBA Program, including the introduction of the Self Development Laboratory that helps first year students develop and hone communicative and relational skills and the re-design and implementation of the core curriculum. Under his leadership, the School's full time MBA program has grown in both the number and the qualifications of its graduates. As Director of the Desautels Centre since its inception in 2002, he has played a major role – together with former Dean Roger Martin – in shaping the School’s distinctive approach to business school pedagogy. He is known widely for his innovative work on the articulation, measurement and development of managerial and executive skills and the design of business school education. He is the author of six books, as well as numerous scholarly articles, and is equally well-known for his work in founding and leading Redline Communications, Inc. (TSX:RDL) - one of the world's leading manufacturers of broadband wireless equipment for mission critical applications.
 
Stéphane Côté is a Professor of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management. For several years, he served as the PhD Coordinator for the Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management area. He joined the Rotman School in 2001 with a PhD from the University of Michigan. His work focuses on how emotional intelligence improves the performance of individuals and groups and shapes the efficiency of organizations. Professor Côté is published widely in the top journals of his field, and has held editorial roles at Emotion, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, and Academy of Management Journal.
 
Mara Lederman is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management. She came to the Rotman School in 2003 with a PhD from MIT. Her research is concentrated in Industrial Organization and Organizational Economics. She focuses on the determinants of firms’ organizational design decisions, as well as the role of information on imperfect markets. She gained particular recognition for her work on the airline industry. Her research is published in top-tier journals and has international visibility. Also, her recent ground breaking work with Prof. Bernardo Blum on designing and implementing the model-focused Capstone Course in the Full Time MBA Program has been both innovative and distinctive.
 
Jan Mahrt-Smith is an Associate Professor of Finance. After earning his PhD at MIT, he taught at the London Business School before joining the Rotman School in 2002. He has taught a number of different finance courses in all of the School’s Master’s and PhD programs, as well as in Executive Education. He is one of the School’s most successful teachers; he has twice been recognized by his students as the Professor of the Year, and also received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. His work on developing an interactive on-line version of his Finance course has opened new opportunities for the School. He has served as Academic Director of the School’s Master of Finance program, and is a tireless champion for the School’s teaching quality, as well as the student experience across all programs.
 
Joanne Oxley is a Professor of Strategic Management. Before joining the Rotman School in 2004, she taught at the Ross School of Business of the University of Michigan. She holds a PhD from Berkeley, and her research focuses on international business and corporate strategy, where she explores how differences in the international environment impact firm strategy and performance. Among other roles in the international academic community, she has served as Division Chair in the Academy of Management, on the Board of Directors of the International Society for the New Institutional Economics, and held editorial positions at Organization Science, Strategic Organization, Management Science and, more recently, the Strategic Management Journal. She teaches, with great success, courses in strategy and international business. For several years, she has steered the Strategy PhD program, and in 2013/14 served as the School’s PhD Director and on the University’s Research Advisory Board.
