Toronto – An adjunct professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, who has been at the forefront of promoting best practices in corporate governance in Canada and around the world, has been honoured by the Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries (CSCS).
David R. Beatty, an adjunct professor of strategic management and Conway Chair of the
Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics and Board Effectiveness, received the Peter Dey Governance Achievement Award at the CSCS’s annual corporate governance conference on August 16.
The award recognizes the outstanding contribution by an individual to corporate governance in Canada and ongoing achievement in the realm of corporate governance.
“Prof. Beatty has remained focused on the goal of improving governance throughout his career and his work has gone a long way to legitimize corporate governance in Canada. He is a true trailblazer and has never shied from moving the ball further down the field to improve corporate governance practices in his own companies, on the boards of the companies he has served and is still serving, and in his academic teachings,” noted a judge on the awards committee.
Prof. Beatty teaches corporate governance and strategy classes at the Rotman School. Under his leadership the Clarkson Centre monitors Canadian corporate governance trends and provides guidance to firms looking to improve their board effectiveness and disclosure.
He was one of the creators of the
Directors Education Program, in partnership with the Institute of Corporate Directors and Rotman Executive Programs, which is the gold standard for directors' education in Canada. He continues to develop new executive programs to promote best practices in governance such as the annual
Stanford-Rotman Corporate Governance Day in partnership with Stanford University’s Rock Center for Corporate Governance. In addition, he serves as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at the Rotman School.
Prof. Beatty was the founding Managing Director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance from 2003 to 2008, the pre-eminent corporate governance organization in Canada, which represents 50 institutional investors with $1,300 billion of assets under management.
Over his career he has served on 38 different boards of directors in Canada, United States, Mexico, Australia and United Kingdom and been chairman of 8 public companies. Currently, he serves as chair of Rubicon Minerals, a start-up gold company in Canada, and on the board of FirstService. He also serves on the boards of privately held Canada Steamship Lines and City Financial in London, UK.
In the not-for-profit sector he served on Peter Drucker’s Foundation Board in the United States for over a decade as Vice Chairman. In 2013 he was inducted into the Order of Canada, the nation’s highest civilian honor, and in 1994 he was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his services to Papua New Guinea.
The Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries is recognized as the most important organization for corporate governance professionals in Canada.
