Two Faculty at UofT’s Rotman School Appointed to the University’s Most Distinguished Rank.

June 1, 2016

Toronto – Two faculty members at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management have been appointed to the University’s most distinguished rank of “University Professor.”

Prof. John Hull, a noted expert in derivatives and risk management, and Prof. Richard Florida, who is known for his work on cities, innovation and urban economic development, were recognized by UofT for their scholarly achievement and pre-eminence in a particular field of knowledge.

This is the first time that professors at the Rotman School have received this honour joining other prestigious past recipients including Janice Gross Stein, John Polanyi, and Geoffrey Hinton. The number of such appointments does not generally exceed two per cent of the tenured faculty at the University. Only five professors at the University received the appointment this year.

“This is a tremendous honor for these individuals and a testament to the strength of our faculty at the Rotman School,” says Prof. Kenneth S. Corts, Vice-Dean, Faculty & Research, at the Rotman School.

Prof. Hull holds the Maple Financial Professor of Derivatives and Risk Management at the Rotman School. He is an internationally recognized authority on derivatives and risk management. He was, with Rotman Prof. Alan White, one of the winners of the Nikko-LOR research competition for his work on the Hull-White interest rate model, which is widely used by practitioners. In 1999 he was voted Financial Engineer of the Year by the International Association of Financial Engineers. He has won many teaching awards, including University of Toronto's prestigious Northrop Frye award. Prof. Hull has written three books: Risk Management and Financial Institutions (now in its 4th edition), Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives (now in its 9th edition) and Fundamentals of Futures and Options Markets (now in its 9th edition). The books have been translated into many languages and are widely used in trading rooms throughout the world, as well as in the classroom. He is currently co-director of the Rotman School’s Master of Finance program and Master of Financial Risk Management program.

Prof. Florida is the Director of Cities at the Martin Prosperity Institute at the Rotman School. His work on the contribution of creativity to the growth and development of urban economies has resulted in a new burgeoning field of study. His work has influenced the way academics think about cities and urbanization across disciplines. In addition, his work has had profound impact outside of academe in shaping the way mayors, Premiers and Governors, heads of state, real estate developers, business leaders, university presidents, and urban leaders think about, act on and plan cities and urban areas. His research revolutionized the field of urbanism and has shaped the debate and conversations on cities and urban development ever since. He is the author of more than ten books including The Rise of the Creative Class. He has published in a wide variety of fields, including leading journals in geography (the Annals of the American Association of Geographers), urban studies, regional science, sociology (the American Sociological Review), and economics (Journal of Urban Economics). He is a Senior Editor at The Atlantic, where he co-founded and serves as Editor-at Large for CityLab, the world’s largest and leading on-line publication devoted to cities and urbanism.
