Toronto – The University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management has joined a prestigious alliance working to transform the health sector by advancing education, research and practice in schools of management.
The Rotman School is the first Canadian school and second non-U.S. school to become a member of the Business School Alliance for Healthcare Management (BAHM). Other members include Harvard Business School, Haas School of Business at the University of California Berkeley, and Indian School of Business.
“BAHM is a premier life sciences business network and our students, faculty, staff, and alumni will benefit from our involvement,” says Will Mitchell, a professor of strategic management and the Anthony S. Fell Chair in New Technologies and Commercialization at the Rotman School. “We look forward to participating in BAHM’s wide range of activities in the sector.”
Since 2004, the Rotman School’s initiatives in healthcare have been led by the Centre for Health Sector Strategy. The Centre has worked on an innovation agenda that produces actionable management and policy knowledge for the health sector and the life sciences. In addition, the initiatives of the Centre include an MBA major in Health Sector Management, as well as Executive Programs with Rotman Executive Programs for health-care professionals.
The School’s MBA Major in Health Sector Management is offered for students in the School’s Full-Time, Morning and Evening MBA programs. It focuses on management in health care delivery systems, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sales and marketing, life sciences product commercialization, and related consulting and financial industries. The major also introduces students to various regulatory bodies and procedures in the health sector. The Centre, in partnership with Rotman Executive Programs, is Canada’s leading academic provider of healthcare executive programs, and offers health sector programs which equip professionals with the knowledge and business skills to lead and manage their organizations effectively in a complex field that is constantly evolving. Both open enrollment and customized programs are offered.
Formed in 2010, BAHM is a collaborative non-profit organization committed to the belief that management education, applied to the challenges of healthcare delivery and healthcare innovation, plays a special role in creating new and important solutions.
While other academic disciplines address policy issues facing the health sector, business schools represent the vital link between addressing the practical issues of managing companies and developing leadership for healthcare institutions. BAHM’s efforts include the establishment of an adjunct faculty network, doctoral student webinars and the BAHM-sponsored Healthcare Management journal.
