April 25, 2018
Toronto – Building on the on the strength of the accounting areas across the three campuses of the University of Toronto, a new centre for research has been established with the support of CPA Ontario.
The CPA Ontario Centre for Accounting Innovation Research will be led by Alex Edwards, the inaugural director and an assistant professor of accounting at the UofT’s Rotman School of Management.
The Centre will bring together scholars from across the University to engage in relevant research that can inform policy and practice in the accounting profession. The Centre will facilitate the research activities of the faculty in their existing areas of expertise through research grants, an annual research conference, and supporting accounting research in the growing area of big data. New opportunities to translate academic research into CPA-member based formats will also be developed through special lectures, discussions, and an annual conference that will focus on the accounting profession, research and education.
“Rotman is making a meaningful contribution to leading academic journals in accounting and finance, as well as to the broader business community through its innovation around technology,” says Richard Piticco, VP Student Services at CPA Ontario. “And with technology playing such a disruptive and transformative role within the accounting profession, we are excited to partner with Rotman to further explore these themes - such as big data and artificial intelligence - in order to deliver valuable, actionable insight to our membership and the broader business community.”
Alex Edwards is an assistant professor of accounting and Director of CPA Ontario Centre for Accounting Innovation Research. His research is focused on taxation and capital markets and has been accepted for publication in the Accounting Review, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Journal of Financial Economics, Contemporary Accounting Research, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of the American Taxation Association, and Tax Notes.
