Rotman School Dean to discuss the future of work at The Economist’s Ideas Economy: Human Potential Conference in September

Toronto / New York , August 23, 2011 - Roger Martin, Dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto will discuss the future of work at The Economist’s second annual Ideas Economy: Human Potential conference on September 14th-15th at The Times Center in New York City. The September event will focus on ”the next level of competition”, the trends and ideas transforming the nature of work and several of the key issues covered in The Economist’s “Future of Jobs” special report to be released on September 10th. Martin will moderate a panel on Design Thinking and will join other notable business leaders, management thinkers, authors and intellectuals at the conference.

Ideas Economy: Human Potential will examine the mechanisms through which individuals, companies and nations can channel competitive energy into positive change. It will also explore how the rise of the social web, increased innovation and the expansion of the entrepreneurial spirit will create more business opportunities than ever before. Through interactive, action-oriented sessions with top thinkers on strategy, innovation, management, creativity, and information, Ideas Economy: Human Potential will chart a new map for growth, productivity, and progress for a competitive age.

“Powerful trends are completely transforming the nature of work and the supply and demand for jobs,” said Matthew Bishop, U.S. business editor and NY bureau chief for The Economist. “In ten years’ time the global labor market will be a very different place and this will have serious implications for businesses, governments and individu¬als over the next decade and beyond.”

“Innovation is now understood to be an imperative not a ‘nice-to-have’ for the modern organization,” said Roger Martin. “However, most organizations struggle mightily to create an environment that accesses the inherent creativity of their work force; this is one of the central challenges of the modern economy
