Rotman Dean Roger Martin reappointed for third term

Toronto , February 18, 2010 – The University of Toronto has announced that Roger Martin, dean of the Rotman School of Management, will serve a third term as dean beginning May 1 and ending June 30, 2014.

Martin’s reappointment to a rare third term was approved February 11. The university’s policy on the appointment of academic administrators allows for such an appointment “where very unusual circumstances exist which, in the judgment of the President, make such renewal desirable.” Extensive external and internal consultations indicated the desirability of extending the Martin’s tenure as dean.

“Prof. Martin has served as dean of the Rotman School of Management for two very successful terms and is currently leading the Rotman School through a major building and expansion project,” said Professor Cheryl Misak, vice-president and provost. “We are delighted he has agreed to see it through to its conclusion.”

Under Martin’s leadership since 1998, the Rotman School has earned a global reputation as one of the world's most innovative business schools for its unique approach to business education with a focus on Integrative Thinking and Business Design. During this time, the school has increased the size of its existing programs such as the Full Time MBA and PhD programs and added new programs including the unique Morning MBA, a Master of Finance and the Omnium Global Executive MBA.

The Rotman School has also increased the size of its faculty which is renowned for its academic research by the Financial Times and added new research centres including the Capital Markets Institute, Centre for Health Sector Strategy, Desautels Centre for Integrative Thinking, International Centre for Pension Management, Michael Lee-Chin Family Institute for Corporate Citizenship, and the Martin Prosperity Institute

As a result of this growth a new building is currently under construction adjacent to the original School, more than doubling its size. Expected to open in 2012, the new structure will be fully integrated with the current building and will house new hi-tech classrooms, flexible study space, and a 400-seat event facility.

Prof. Martin's research work is in Integrative Thinking, Business Design, Corporate Social Responsibility and Country Competitiveness.  He writes extensively on design and was a regular columnist for the BusinessWeek.com Innovation and Design Channel.  He is also a regular contributor to: Washington Post’s On Leadership blog: the Financial Times’ Judgment Call column: and Harvard Business Review’s The Conversation blog.  He has written eleven Harvard Business Review articles and published three books: The Design of Business (Harvard Business Press, 2009), The Opposable Mind (Harvard Business Press, 2007) and The Responsibility Virus (Basic Books, 2002).  He also co-wrote (with Rotman Prof. Mihnea Moldoveanu) The Future of the MBA (Oxford University Press, 2008) and Diaminds (University of Toronto Press, 2009). His next book, Fixing the Game: Bubbles, Crashes, and What Capitalism Can Learn from the NFL, will be published by Harvard Business Press in May 2011.

In 2010, he was named one of the 27 most influential designers in the world by Business Week. In 2009, he was named by The Times (UK) and Forbes.com one of the 50 top management thinkers in the world (#32).  In 2007 he was named a BusinessWeek 'B-School All-Star' for being one of the 10 most influential business professors in the world.

He serves on the Boards of Thomson Reuters Corporation, Research in Motion, The Skoll Foundation, and the Canadian Credit Management Foundation.  He serves as Chair of Tennis Canada and the Ontario Task Force on Competitiveness, Productivity and Economic Progress.

A Canadian from Wallenstein, Ontario, Roger received his AB from Harvard College, with a concentration in Economics, in 1979 and his MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1981.
