Build Something Massive with Rotman's Creative Destruction Lab
October 9, 2019,6:00 - 7:30 PM | Registration starts at 5:30 PM
Join us to learn about Rotman's Creative Destruction Lab - a seed-stage program for massively scalable, science- and technology-based companies - and how Rotman MBA students can get involved. This talk features:
- Sonia Sennik, Executive Director
- Valerie Chiykowski, Venture Manager
- Malaika Kapur, Course Administrator
Launched in 2012 at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, the program has now expanded with locations in Vancouver (Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia), Calgary (Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary), Montreal (HEC Montréal), Halifax (Rowe School of Business, Dalhousie University) and Oxford (Saïd Business School, University of Oxford). CDL is particularly well suited for early-stage companies with links to university research labs.
The program involves:
- Mentorship from select entrepreneurs and angel investors
- Opportunities to raise capital
- Advice on technology roadmaps from world-class scientists
- Business development support from top business students
CDL courses:
The CDL courses are targeted toward MBA students who are interested in careers in strategy, entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial finance, new product development, and economic development policy. The first year CDL intro course focuses on a framework for developing an entrepreneurial strategy and provides an introduction to artificial intelligence (AI) in the real business world. The second year CDL advanced course gives students the opportunity to study the process of commercializing technological innovation through a series of close interactions with real, early-stage technology ventures and their potential seed investors. Over the course of the nine-month CDL advanced course, students will have four core learning experiences:
- Evaluation of early-stage science and technology-based ventures;
- Exposure to CDL venture and mentor engagement and the investment process;
- Strategy instruction tailored to early-stage science and technology-based ventures;
- Business development and/or internal consulting experience with a CDL venture
