The Creative Destruction Lab
Build Something Massive
Rotman MBA students play a vital role at the Creative Destruction Lab by providing aspiring entrepreneurs with the strategic insights they need to turn their research innovations into high-growth ventures.
Launched at the Rotman School in August 2012, the Creative Destruction Lab is one of the world’s fastest-growing venture labs. The eight companies from the first cohort of the Lab have generated over $165 million in equity value, with the support of seven of Canada’s most prominent and successful entrepreneurs.
"At business school they try to teach the science of entrepreneurship, but do the art and the science come together? They do at the Creative Destruction Lab."
- Tiff Macklem, Dean, Rotman School of Management
The year-long MBA course provides a transformational experience for Rotman MBA students by replacing the traditional case study method with experiential learning (learning-by-doing) during the process of rapid equity-value creation. Working alongside the G7 and ML7 Fellows and venture founders, students are given a unique chance to learn how to evaluate, finance, and manage technology businesses.
At every step of the ventures' progression through the Lab, the class is there to watch, listen, and most importantly contribute to the process of equity value creation through the development of financial models, sales and marketing strategies, and other business development activities. In addition to the CDL Course taught by Prof. Ajay Agrawal, the Lab's Founder, students are encouraged to take the CDL Strategy course with the Lab's Chief Economist, Prof. Joshua Gans.
