Aligning the Stars: Using Systems Thinking to (Re)Design Canadian Healthcare

Every health system on the planet has room to improve. None in the developed world had more room to improve than the Veterans Administration's Health System in the U.S. - a publicly funded health system remarkably similar to those in Canada.  Based on Professor Brian Golden’s research with the VA, this sample class will reveal the levers that leaders - of health systems and healthcare organizations - can use to move from woefully underperforming to world class.

Interested in the Rotman School and want a glimpse into the School? We invite you to try this healthcare strategy sample class led by our distinguished faculty and Vice-Dean, and Professor of Strategic Management, Brian Golden.

Professor Brian Golden is Vice-Dean, Professional Programs, and the Sandra Rotman Chaired Professor in Health Sector Strategy at the Rotman School of Management, The University of Toronto, and The University Health Network. In 2006 he became founding Executive Director of The Collaborative for Health Sector Strategy, a policy, research and leadership development institute funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health. In his role at the Collaborative he was a member of the select advisory committee that led to the creation of Ontario’s Excellent Care for All legislation. In 2013 he co-authored the province’s report on Primary Care Governance, and in 2015 co-authored “Patient Care Groups: A new model of population based primary health care for Ontario” (the “Price Report”) for the Ministry of Health.
