Accounting: Dissertation

Our Strength: Our Program

The dissertation is the final step in completing a PhD in Accounting at the Rotman School. It is the outcome of extensive course work and research, and is the student's original contribution to their field of study.

The dissertation should constitute a significant contribution to knowledge in the field. The student will be guided in this dissertation research by a supervisory committee. The supervisory committee is composed of a supervisor and at least two additional members of the Graduate Faculty. The supervisory committee must meet with the student at least once a year to assess the student's progress and provide advice on future work. Before carrying out research for the dissertation, the doctoral candidate must obtain approval for the project from the faculty members in the area.

When an acceptable thesis is presented by the candidate to the faculty, the chair and the Director of the Doctoral Program will arrange for the School of Graduate Studies to convene an examining committee to judge the acceptability of the dissertation. This committee consists of a minimum of four voting members, at least one member of the supervisory committee, and at least two voting members not  from the supervisory committee. A faculty member from another department of the university will sit as the Chair of the exam, and at least one faculty member from another university will act as the external appraiser of the dissertation.
