The PhD Program in Business Economics at the Rotman School is designed to prepare students for research-oriented careers in university economics departments and management faculties as well as careers in business and government. The PhD provides in-depth knowledge of and training in general economic theory and methodology. Students benefit from a close working relationship with leading scholars throughout their studies.


Admission to the Program

The PhD program in Business Economics is looking for accomplished graduate and undergraduate students with degrees - including an MBA - in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics / Applied Mathematics or other quantitative fields or in business. Successful applicants demonstrate their excellence through outstanding grades, top scores on standardized test, and quantitative research skills.

Program Structure and Requirements

The Rotman PhD in Business Economics is a challenging program, providing effective training for an academic career. The program includes a full year of mandatory microeconomic, macroeconomic and econometrics courses, a year of economic field courses, a research project, comprehensive examinations and a final dissertation.



The Business Economics faculty at the Rotman School are experts in using economic theory and quantitative methods to analyze business enterprises and the factors contributing to the diversity of organizational structures and the relationships of firms with labour, capital and product markets.
