Comprehensive Examinations

Students must successfully complete the microeconomics and macroeconomics comprehensive examinations as set by the Department of Economics at the University of Toronto. These examinations are offered initially at the end of the Winter semester of year 1. Performance on these exams is evaluated on a distinction/pass/fail basis. If a theory comprehensive examination is failed on the first attempt, it must be re-taken later in the summer (usually in August) of the same year. Students who fail to pass the comprehensive exams in macroeconomics and microeconomics within these two attempts will be classified as ‘not in good standing’.
