Bio

Ruth De Backer is a Principal in the New Jersey Office of McKinsey & Company. She joined McKinsey’s Brussels office in 2000 and has since then worked across several industries, specializing in Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices and Private Equity.

Ruth works closely with senior management of pharmaceutical, medical device, and healthcare services companies on business building, including corporate strategy, organization and governance, portfolio management, business development (mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and spin-offs) , and international growth strategies. She also has worked with private equity clients advising them on LBO of healthcare companies.

She leads the joint venture of McKinsey’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Products (PMP) and Strategy & Corporate Finance practices. Recently, she co-led McKinsey’s research in the Activist Investor landscape, “Preparing for bigger, bolder shareholder activists”, McKinsey on Finance, March 2014.

Ruth De Backer holds a Licentiate in Law (Business Law) from the University of Ghent, Belgium and a LL.M. (Financial Law and Trade Regulation) from New York University.
