About the BIC

The Business Information Centre (BIC) is the library and resource centre which supports the faculty and staff of the Rotman School of Management and the Rotman Commerce program.   

Our mission is to support the research, curriculum development, and educational activities of the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management.

Collections available

The BIC print collection covers a wide range of business subjects (accounting, including standard & guidelines; business & economics; corporate directories & rankings; and management including handbooks & guides): Material in the BIC collection can be located through the University of Toronto Library Catalogue.

  • 5,000+ books
  • 500+ journal and periodical titles, including 200+ active subscriptions.
  • 100 active reference serials (directories, )
  • Newspapers: Barron’s, Financial Times of London, Globe & Mail, National Post, Toronto Star, and the Wall Street Journal.
  • Special collections: Michael Bliss (Canadian Business History - library use only), Rotman Speaker series, Rotman PhD dissertations (library use only)

U of T faculty, staff and students have access to the BIC’s electronic resources, including core business and finance databases linked from the BIC’s homepage.  Faculty, staff and students also have access to unique e-resources available only on BIC workstations using your UTOR ID, including:

  • CEIC Data (BIC workstation 1);
  • DBRS (Dominion Bond Rating Service) (CD-ROM);
  • Faulkner library (all BIC workstations);
  • Industry Norms and Ratio D&B (CD-ROM);
  • Intercorporate ownership (Workstation #1);CD-ROM 2001-2009.
  • Intercorporate ownership (Workstation #1);CD-ROM 2010.
  • LexisNexis [Canadian Academic version] (all BIC workstations);
  • Scott's Canadian business directories (all BIC workstations);
  • SDC Mergers and Acquisitions (BIC workstations 1 & 2);
  • Financial Performance Indicators (2005-2009) (Workstation #1).

Services available

U of T Faculty & Students:

Students, faculty and staff have access to:

Short term loans (3-hours) for:

  • MBA course reserves and reading materials for all first-year and many second-year MBA courses;
  • Front desk “in demand” books;

Short term loans (3-days) for:

  • Career resource collection containing directories, interview preparation, job search strategies and more.

These items are held for loan at the Reference Desk.  To borrow one must have a valid undergrad, graduate, staff or faculty Tcard.  Fines for late items are $ 0.50/hour

  • Photocopying: Two photocopiers are available in the BIC.
      • Cash: $0.15/page, OR
      • Copy cards are for sale at the Reference desk:
          • 40 copies ($ 4.00 + $ 1.00 deposit)
          • 90 copies ($ 9.00 + $ 1.00 deposit)
  • Printing is available from all BIC workstations:
      • $0.10/page or $0.15 double sided, cash only
  • Quiet space: The BIC provides quiet study space, including computer workstations for research purposes and study carrels that support laptop use.

The BIC also offers students and faculty research-related services, including:

  • Reference: We are here to help you find the information you need. Ask your questions in person, by telephone or by e-mail. Our reference Desk is staffed during all hours of operation. Topic-specific and course-specific research guides and database guides are also available.
  • Library instruction: Library tours and group training in key resources are offered at the beginning of the fall and winter terms to students. One-on-one consultations for students, faculty, and staff are also available. For an appointment, please contact the Reference Desk.

Alumni and Members of the Public:

Alumni and members of the public may request:

  • Access to our hard copy journals, reference books and other print materials.
  • Directional assistance to locate these print items within the collection.
  • Quick reference assistance (15 minutes or less) from the staff workstation.
  • Guidance on Toronto Public Library and Knowledge Ontario’s online resources.

Unfortunately we are not able to provide the following services:

  • Access to BIC workstations or electronic resources (including CD-ROMs and printers).
  • Access to the University of Toronto Library’s proprietary electronic resources.
  • Detailed, in-depth reference or research assistance.

Alumni and members of the public wishing to use University of Toronto Library computers and electronic resources must use a designated LIRA public access terminal in Robarts Library or Gerstein Science Information Centre.

BIC hours

The BIC's hours during the fall and winter terms are:

  • Mon - Thu 8:45 am - 9:30 pm *
  • Fri 8:45am - 5:00 pm *
  • Sat 12 noon - 5:00 pm *
  • Sun 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm *

* No public access to building after 9:00 pm or on weekends.
