The Capital Markets
Institute received $750 thousand of sponsorship money from the
Toronto Stock Exchange in January 1998. The money received funds
capital markets research and program activity at the CMI, including
round tables, seminars and conferences. The TSX's founding contribution
was announced in a press
release in January 1998.
The founding of the
CMI was part of a bigger University of Toronto initiative in capital
markets that was generously sponsored by the ORDCF ($3.75 million),
the TSX ($2.75 million) and Peter L. Mitchelson/Sit Investment
Associates Foundation ($1.0 million). The sponsorship funds capital
markets research and program activity at the CMI, the Honourable
Frank Iacobucci Chair in Capital Markets Regulation at the Faculty
of Law, the SIT Chair in Investment Strategy at the Rotman School
of Management, the TSX Chairs in Capital Markets at both the Faculty
of Law and the Rotman School of Management, the Financial Research
and Trading Lab at the Rotman School of Management and the Graduate
Fellowship program in capital markets jointly at the Faculty of
Law and Rotman.
The ORDCF is designed to
promote research excellence in the province by increasing the R&D
capacity of Ontario universities and other research institutions
through private and public sector
partnerships.
The TSE is Canada's premier
market for senior equities, accounting for nearly 95% of all equity
trading in Canada.

Benefits of Sponsorship
The CMI is expanding its sponsorship program to establish relationships
with other leading participants in the Canadian capital markets community.
CMI sponsors play an important role that goes far beyond providing funding
in helping the CMI to achieve its mission and objectives. CMI sponsors enjoy
a close and public relationship with two leading professional schools in the
capital markets field: the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and the Rotman
School of Management.
Sponsors are entitled to
be represented on the CMI's Advisory Board and thereby participate
in the strategic planning and oversight
of the management of the
CMI. Sponsors are also invited to become involved in the development and
production of CMI roundtables, conferences and symposia, as well
as other CMI events.
Invitation-only events like CMI roundtables are open first to CMI sponsors,
and we hope that representatives of CMI sponsors will participate in all
CMI events.
Becoming a CMI sponsor demonstrates
your firm's commitment to and interest in world-class research
into the impact of the
globalization of business
and capital markets on the evolution of the structure, regulation and institutional
mechanisms of Canadian capital markets.
