Combined Master of Arts (Russian and East European Studies)
Master of Business Administration

The Combined Programs in REES/MBA provides specialized professional training for those seeking careers in management in the changing environment of the post-communist world. Canadian and other western firms selling or manufacturing in the region need the services of well-informed specialists who can access the political and business risks and opportunities as well as navigate the legal pitfalls of emergent legal systems and deal with lawyers and government officials in the area. Best equipped to meet this demand are people with dual expertise in Management and Russian and East European Studies.

The MBA/MA in Russian and East European Studies allows a student to receive the combined degree in three years of academic study instead of the four years that would be required to receive the two degrees separately.

Year 1 of the combined program consists of completion with a B+ standing of the first year of the MBA program. In years 2 and 3, students take a mix of courses in Management and in Russian and East European Studies, with the following distribution:

  • ten half courses (or the equivalent) in REES: four in the major field, two each in two other fields, and RUS2000Y (the equivalent of two half courses); four of the ten half courses must be taken during the second year;
  • six half courses in the MBA at the 2000 level;
  • two half courses where the student chooses;
  • reading competence must be demonstrated before the beginning of the final year in one of the region's languages, pertinent to the research undertaken by the student for the major research paper in RUS2000Y.
