Rotman School of Management Big Ideas Speaker Series - LONDON

1800 to 1915 discussion; 1915 to 2015 cocktails
TOPIC: How Organizations Create Thick Value
PANELISTS:
Umair Haque, Director, Havas Media Lab; Founder, Bubblegeneration; Author, The New Capitalist Manifesto: Building A Disruptively Better Business (HBR Press 2011)
Adi Ignatius, Editor-In-Chief, Harvard Business Review
Prof. Roger Martin,  Dean, Rotman School of Management, U of Toronto; Author, The Responsibility Virus, The Opposable Mind, The Design of Business and Fixing the Game: How Runaway Expectations Broke the Economy and How to Get Back to Reality (HBR Press 2011); Corporate Director, Thomson Reuters, Research in Motion
DISCUSSION SYNOPSIS: Umair Haque and Roger Martin both believe that business as usual has outgrown the old paradigm of short-term growth, competition at all costs, adversarial strategy, and pushing costs onto future generations. These outworn assumptions are good for creating only “thin” value—gains that are largely illusory and produce diminishing returns every year.  For “thick” value—enduring, meaningful, sustainable advantage that deeply benefits the larger society—Haque and Martin will detail five new cornerstones of prosperity in the twenty-first century:
•Loss advantage: From value chains to value cycles
•Responsiveness: From value propositions to value conversations
•Resilience: From strategy to philosophy
•Creativity: From protecting a marketplace to completing a marketplace
•Difference: From goods to betters
Haque and Martin will share how these methods will produce a more enduring prosperity for business as well as society.
FEE: £40 per person (includes the session, cocktails, 1 copy of The New Capitalist Manifesto, 1 copy of Fixing the Game and 1 copy of the April 2012 issue of Harvard Business Review)
PLACE: Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Ballroom, 66 Knightsbridge, London, UK

Rotman School of Management Big Ideas Speaker Series - LONDON

18.30 to 19.15 welcome reception; 19.15 sharp to 20.00 discussion; 20.00 to 20.45 drinks and canapés
TOPIC: How Runaway Expectations Broke the Economy and How to Get Back to Reality
DISCUSSANTS:
Tyler Brûlé, Editor-in-Chief, Monocle; CEO and Chairman, Winkreative

DISCUSSION SYNOPSIS: In his latest book, Fixing the Game, Roger Martin reveals the culprit behind the sorry state of capitalism: our deep and abiding commitment to the idea that the purpose of the firm is to maximize shareholder value. This theory has led to a massive growth in stock-based compensation for executives and, through this, to a naive and wrongheaded linking of the real market--the business of designing, making, and selling products and services--with the expectations market--the business of trading stocks, options, and complex derivatives. Martin shows how this tight coupling has been engineered and lays out its results: a single-minded focus on the expectations market that will continue driving us from crisis to crisis--unless we act now to make changes.  He also reveals what to change and how to do so.

PLACE: Monocle Headquarters, Midori House, 1 Dorset Street, London, UK W1U 4EG
FEE: None. All are welcome. Pre-registration online by 1830 on March 26 is mandatory.
