Research and Teaching Interests
Teaches MBA courses in game theory and competitive strategy and PhD courses in Strategic Organization and Research Methods. Studying economic phenomena from the point of view of a sociologist, Joel is concerned with how institutions, inter-organizational relations, and managers shape patterns of competition and cooperation among firms and industry evolution. He is currently working three major research projects. One examines the evolution of underwriting syndicate networks in the Canadian investment banking industry, funded by a grant from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (2000-2004; 2006-2010). The second analyzes the effects of strategic alliances and intellectual property development on competition and firm performance in the Canadian biotechnology industry, funded in part by Merck Frosst Canada & Co.'s Research Award on Canadian Competitiveness. And, the third, is a project examining the origins, evolution, and legitimation of private military companies (PMCs) since the end of the Cold War. The work aims to improve our understanding of the role and effective governance of these controversial firms.
