1. Do I have to own a laptop computer to enter the Rotman MBA program?
Yes, all students entering the two-year MBA program must own a laptop computer that is able to connect to the Rotman wireless network as an entrance requirement. Students taking a combined MBA program (i.e. JD/MBA, SKOLL) must have the laptop prior to starting any MBA courses and should check with the other department for any laptop requirements that they may have.
2. Is there a standard laptop configuration?
The standard Rotman laptop configuration is PC based laptop that is running MS
Windows XP or MS Vista operating system, has Microsoft Internet Explorer, and
is able to connect to the Rotman Wireless network - more details follow. The
student portal (R-World) and the applications that you will be using are tested
to be compatible with the standard laptop configuration and all students are
assumed to have access to laptops that match this configuration.
3. Can I use my Apple laptop?
As mentioned above Apple technology and other browsers are not supported or
tested in this environment. There are some unique hardware configurations used
in Apple computers that could cause problems with the applications we use.
While you can use an Apple laptop at Rotman and most of the time you can use it
successfully, there will likely be times when applications may not work as
expected, even if you are running the Windows OS on your Apple laptop.
The Rotman Helpdesk does not support the MAC OS or the Apple hardware. If you
are running the Windows OS on an Apple they will provide configuration
assistance, however, if the problem is related to the hardware or Mac OS they
cannot provide assistance.
4. Can you provide more detail on the standard laptop configuration?
The standard Rotman laptop configuration is listed below in two different
configurations, for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Microsoft Vista requires
higher processing power than Windows XP and therefore the CPU and RAM
requirements are higher. Typically, any PC with wireless connectivity and was
purchased within the past two years will meet the requirements.
| Windows XP |

See question below for more details on the different wireless protocols that are
supported at Rotman. |
5. What do I need to connect to the Rotman Wireless network?
Rotman supports two different wireless protocols - 802.11a and
802.11g. Sometimes these protocols are referred by the letter only (A or
G). Note: there is a another protocol called 802.11n and
some manufacturers are offering pre-release products. This protocol has not yet
been ratified/finalized by the IEEE and is not currently supported by Rotman.
Laptops can either have the wireless connectivity built-in or it must be add
through an external device such as a PC card or USB adapter. There is generally
no difference between the built in and external devices in performance. If
purchasing a new laptop it is recommended to get the wireless connectivity
built-in for the extra convenience.
If you are purchasing a new laptop or wireless hardware it is recommended to
purchase from a recognized brand. Budget or generic hardware usually does not
have as sophisticated device drivers and hardware as the name brands and this
can cause performance and connectivity problems and are therefore not
recommended. Wireless hardware made with the Intel chipset, sometimes called
Centrino, have proved very reliable.
6. Does the School have any special arrangements or programs to purchase
laptops?
Yes, we have arranged special purchase prices for Rotman students with Dell
Computer Corporation for business-quality, network-ready Latitude series
laptops. Dell has several different laptop models available to purchase through
a specially-designed Rotman@Dell.ca Web site. On it, you can view
specifications, upgrade options, and order online. Once you are enrolled in the
Rotman MBA Program, you will be given the Web site Rotman@Dell.ca Web site
address.
7. Why would I choose a Dell laptop over another manufacturer?
Compatibility, Reliability, Longevity, and Service. The Dell laptops that are
offered on the Rotman@Dell.ca site are business-quality laptops that have been
selected to reduce the amount of problems during and after you finish the MBA
program. Some of the features are:
-
Rotman Helpdesk technicians are certified by Dell to service the recommended
laptop models (Latitude) and are able to provide software and hardware support.
They only provide "best effort" support for software problems and no hardware
support on the other Dell laptop models or other manufacturers laptops.
-
The Rotman Helpdesk has spare accessories for the recommended Dell models. For
example: you can borrow a power supply should you forget yours at home.
-
Comes with a 3 year Complete Care warranty. If the laptop breaks within 3
years, even if it was your fault, Dell will repair it no charge and usually the
next business day.
-
These are business quality laptops with certified hardware and network
components to maximize performance and minimize compatibility problems in any
home or business network, including the Rotman/Campus Wireless Network.
-
Loaded with Windows Vista Business edition for maximum business performance and
security.
-
Many upgrade options available.
-
Discounted price and free delivery.
-
Dell is recognized as a leader in Service and Support.
-
30-day money back guarantee.
-
Managed product line to ensure long availability of parts and upgrades.
8. If I am buying a new laptop, what other things should I consider?
One important issue to consider is the weight of the unit and how you plan to
transport it. Carrying a 6.0 pound (2.73 Kg) laptop is a heavy load on top of
notes and books. There are several lightweight models available (3.0-4.5 pound,
1.38-2.05 Kg) that save the back and shoulders. But with lightweight models,
there are usually hardware compromises such as smaller screens and keyboards.
Also consider what type of carrying case you will be using and the distance you
have to commute. There are a wide variety of brief cases and backpacks designed
to carry laptops, but they are not necessarily easy on backs and shoulders.
Extended warranty is worth considering if it includes a quick turn around on
repairs and covers accidental breakage. The Rotman@Dell models come with a 3
year, next business day warranty that includes accidental breakage.
If you are wondering about hardware upgrades or "nice-to-haves", you may want to
think about adding memory or increasing your hard disk size; getting a second
battery; upgrading the battery (9 cell vs. 6 cell); if available, an extra
power adapter for home; and getting a CD-RW or DVD-RW for transferring large
files and backup. Some models allow you to upgrade to faster processors. You
should also consider a security cable. While there has been very little thief
at Rotman a security cable provides an inexpensive deterrent. If you don't have
a printer at home your may want to consider getting one. Rotman has printers
for use by the students (there is a small charge for printing), however, many
students prefer the convenience of having a home printer. USB keys have become
very inexpensive and are convenient to back up and transfer files.
9. When is a good time to buy a laptop?
We suggest that you order your computer approximately four to six weeks before
the start of your program (including any pre-courses) to get the best price and
latest technology. But this will vary with the vendor and product you chose.
Some vendors do not carry stock and have to order the equipment through their
suppliers, so the time-to-delivery may vary greatly. Other companies only sell
equipment "made to order". Dell laptops are examples of a "made to order"
product. If you order your laptop through Dell, the laptop is not manufactured
until the order has been placed. The time from order to delivery is about 10
working days. Whatever vendor you choose, make sure you ask about the
availability of the product before you purchase. You should also be aware that
sometimes newly announced models are not available for extended periods of
time.
10. What software will I be required to have?
You are required to have the Microsoft Windows XP or Vista operating system and
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or newer. Almost all new laptops will come with
this pre-loaded. As an MBA student you will be provided, free of charge, with
MS Office, Anti Virus software, and other applications required for the program
at the start of the first year of your program.
