The London Internship Experience: Building Rotman Talent Overseas

The Rotman School of Management in partnership with the Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce and other UK-based business networks offer first-year students the London Internship Experience. Students eligible to work in the UK via existing EU citizenship or through the UK Youth Mobility Scheme Tier 5 Visa take on challenging and relevant paid 10-week internships in the summer between first and second year with companies and organizations in London and the surrounding region.

Participating employers post internship positions beginning in January of each year with the Rotman Corporate Connections Centre. These positions are available exclusively to eligible Rotman students. Candidates are interviewed by phone or in-person via the employer's Toronto office and, if selected, contract directly with the hiring company or organization.

Internship Benefits
Past interns have held positions with employers ranging from RBC Capital and RBC Wealth Management to the Canadian High Commission and CGI. Many interns have indicated that this international work experience gave them a distinct edge in their efforts to secure full-time positions after graduation as well as providing the following benefits:

• A personal and professional network that is international not just regional
• Work experience in the global financial centre
• Concrete experience in moving to a new city, adapting to new work cultures and becoming settled in a very short time.

The internship program is administered by Rotman's Director UK & Europe, Matilda Kentridge, who is based full-time in the UK and is available to liaise with employers and students and handle ongoing communication and development issues.

Student Testimonial

I had the opportunity to work for the Royal Bank of Canada in London, England as a summer intern in 2009. The experience helped me gain a broader understanding of global finance and how a domestic bank seeks international growth but also how to integrate with and understand a different corporate and social culture. International experience fostered my ability to adapt to a completely new environment as I learned not only new technical and job skills but also the soft skills required to communicate effectively and influence outcomes. I believe these are transferable skills, that when developed well, strongly differentiate individuals.

My summer experience with RBC in London led directly to a full-time opportunity with RBC in Toronto following graduation. The recruiting team cited my ability to deal with ambiguity, to get up to speed quickly and contribute effectively in a new place and culture and to influence without position or authority as key reasons for my employment offer. These were all skills developed through the international internship and I'm certain they will continue to impact and influence my future success and career growth. '

Michael K. Schmidt
Associate, Graduate Leadership Program
Royal Bank of Canada

Michael was an intern in the Rotman and Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce Internship Program in 2009. He worked at RBC's London office where he conducted the feasibility research and worked on components of the implementation strategy for the Canadian launch of the Corporate Employee and Executive Services (CEES) division.

Post-Graduation Work Permit Program in Canada

Upon successful completion of your MBA program, international students are eligible for a Canadian work permit without employer sponsorship or job offer. This is a major advantage Canadian business schools have over our US counterparts.

A further advantage Rotman has over many other Canadian MBA programs is the length of the work permit granted to international students enrolled in the Rotman Full Time MBA. Citizenship and Immigration Canada allows graduate of two-year MBA programs, such as the Rotman School of Management, to get a work permit valid for 3 years. Graduates of one-year MBA programs are only entitled to a one-year work permit.
