Admission Requirements

This information is for students in third year in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (all programs), or who are on a PEY following third year, who desire to apply to enter the Skoll Program (Engineering/MBA Program). Only such students are eligible to enter this program.

All entrance documents (including the GMAT results), whether applying during third year or during a PEY following third year, should be submitted to the Skoll Program Office, 44 St. George Street, BA2015, by the deadlines given on the Program Overview page, as depicted on the following schedule:

Unfortunately, those on student visas cannot participate in the Skoll Program owing to the two internship work terms involved.

Part A: Summary of Admission Requirements

Engineering students may be accustomed to course grades as the primary type of admission requirement. However, management programs tend to look at "soft" skills as well as "hard" skills. By third year, some evidence of these soft skills should be available, from summer jobs, extracurricular activities, PEY, etc. Note in particular that managers are, among other things, leaders. Leaders must be able to communicate effectively. Therefore, there is also an emphasis on communication skills as an admissions requirement to the Skoll Program. This is also reflected in the interview process and in the GMAT exam.

Strong Academic Performance:
A minimum of a B+ (77%) average is required in each of the four most recent Engineering terms prior to application. (If you have one term slightly below 77% and all your other entrance parameters are golden, you should still apply.) You need not provide your own transcripts; they will be provided by the Office of the Registrar of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

GMAT:   Students must write the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) . This exam is used by all business schools in North America (and much of the rest of the world as well). Note that all components of the GMAT score are important: "quantitative," "verbal," and "writing."

It is emphasized that the GMAT exam is the long-lead-time item in this application. As such, it should be written as soon as possible, preferably in the summer between Year II and Year III, or during a PEY (if any) after Year III. Most students find that some significant preparation for this test is advisable. See the GMAT Website:  www.gmac.org

Although part of the GMAT score is available almost immediately upon writing, the AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment) component is mailed to the applicant (and to the University) some two weeks after the test. A strong GMAT score, consistent with the scores of MBA students accepted by the Rotman school, will be required. Although GMAT scores vary somewhat from year to year, a minimum score of 650 should provide a useful target for Skoll students. IMPORTANT: 'University of Toronto, Skoll Program' (Code BTD-KS-37) should be selected as the U of T destination for your GMAT results.

Résumé:  In addition to academic data, be sure to give relevant professional background, and make certain to highlight any entrepreneurial or leadership experience. You may also include extracurricular activities.

Letters of Reference: Three letters of reference are required, at least one of which should be from an academic, and at least one of which should be from an employer, based on the letter-of-reference format specified in the Skoll Application Form.

Interview: Applicants may be requested to attend an interview conducted by representatives of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Rotman School of Management.

Essays: These are described in the Skoll Application Form (available from the Skoll Program Office).

Part B: - Application to the Skoll Program

Applicants to the Skoll Program are asked to use the application form specially developed for the Skoll Program. This should be obtained, in person, from the Director, Skoll Program, at which time further information and guidance about the Program can be given.
