The Alberg 37

“With long overhangs and a pleasing sheer, the 37 is an unmistakably classic design ... Below the waterline the forefoot is cut away at the forward end of a relatively short keel. A large, raked rudder is attached directly to the keel.  Low topsides, a long and narrow cockpit and a well-proportioned coach-house are other distinct features of the Alberg.”

From: The Alberg 37: A Dream-Boat Circa 1970 And 1995

BY PAUL HOWARD (Canadian Yachting, 1995)

The Alberg 37 offers a sea kindly motion and balanced sailing that goes to weather extremely well.  That combined with her strength of construction makes for a great offshore cruiser.

The Alberg is a classic cruising yawl with the finest of pedigrees; on a par with a Hinckley for style and grace.  Designer Carl Alberg was a disciple and employee of John Alden.

Wind Mistress

Her classic lines, unique “sea foam” green and white deck, white (awlgripped) hull, brite work and brass winches make Wind Mistress one of the prettiest boats on the Great Lakes, where she has been sailed since her launch.

She has a long, narrow cockpit which seats six comfortably under way (more at the dock!).  Or, equally well one or two for a quiet afternoon sail or nap.  She has a generous foredeck as well, and her wide side decks, high toe rail, tall (double) lifelines and good handrails along the cabin top make it nice and secure up there.

Her deck and cockpit layout make her easy to single- or double-hand.  The steering pedestal is well forward, which makes it easy to reach the sheets when single-handing.  The main halyard runs back to the port cabin top and the fully-battened main drops easily into its lazy jacks.

Apart from adding a classic look (40 square feet of sail), the mizzen provides the option of a balanced jib-and-jigger sail plan for or a leisurely cruise ... or wilder conditions.  And, in lighter winds, the green and white DRS spinnaker pulls her along quickly (6 knots in a 12 knot breeze).

Her full keel makes for a solid ride; unlike beamy modern cruisers, a little wind doesn’t mean a roller coaster ride!

Below, berthing for 5 is set in a layout fully trimmed in quality woodwork.  The cabinetry is a cherry color and the cabin sole is teak and holly.  The interior is preserved in its original state accentuating her classic appeal.

Berthing begins with a generous V-berth and insert double forward, with ample storage below and to either side in finely fitted cabinetry.  Moving aft, there is a head to port with sea-toilet, sink and a shower (though not used at present).  Further aft is an L-shaped lounge and settee.  The salon table folds up against the bulkhead, and the settee pulls out to form a full double berth. To port, aft of the salon, is a wet hanging locker for foul weather gear, which drains into the bilge, and the nav station.

To starboard, is a spacious hanging locker across from the head, and a door closes off the forepeak area for privacy (though the door is not used at present).  Moving aft again, there is a seat on the forward end and plenty of storage behind and below.  The L-shaped galley, including microwave oven, double-compartment refrigerator and ample storage cabinets, are to starboard and aft by the companionway; the sink is centerline along the aft bulkhead.
