Toronto – A senior professor and former associate dean with experience as an educator and researcher in strategy, organizations and global health has been elected and installed as president of the Academy of Management (AOM), the preeminent professional association of more than 20,000 management and organization scholars from 125 countries. Prof. Anita McGahan, who holds the Rotman Chair in Management at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, will be the AOM’s president for 2016/17. She assumed the role during the AOM’s annual meeting, which was recently held in Anaheim, and which attracted over 11,000 scholars and practitioners for sessions on a host of subjects relating to business strategy, organizational behavior, corporate governance, entrepreneurship, organizational innovation, technology management, leadership, careers, human resources, organization theory, and other management-related topics.
McGahan was associate dean of research and director of the PhD program at the Rotman School from 2010 to 2015, a period in which the School’s ranking in the Financial Times for research rose from 17th to 4th and for the PhD Program rose from 11th to 4th. McGahan is currently a professor of strategic management at the Rotman School who is cross appointed to the University's Munk School of Global Affairs and Faculty of Medicine; is a faculty member in the MacArthur Research Network on Opening Governance; and is Chief Economist at the Massachusetts General Hospital Division for Global Health and Human Rights. Her credits include three books and over 100 articles, case studies, notes and other published material on competitive advantage, industry evolution, and financial performance. Her current research emphasizes entrepreneurship in the public interest and innovative collaboration between public and private organizations. She is also pursuing a long-standing interest in the inception of new industries, particularly in global health. Previously, in 2010, she was awarded at the AOM's Business Strategy and Policy division's "Irwin Distinguished Educator Award" and, in 2012, she received from the Academy its Career Distinguished Educator Award for her championship of reform in the core curriculum of business schools. In 2015 she was named an Academy of Management Fellow, which recognizes and honours members of the AOM who have made significant contributions to the science and practice of management.
