Baruch College Victorious Again at the Rotman International Trading Competition.

February 22, 2021

Toronto – A team from the Master of Financial Engineering program at Baruch College in New York City has won the Rotman International Trading Competition - Celebration Edition with another Baruch College team placing second.

Moving online for the first time due to the challenging global environment, the competition was hosted by the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management on February 19. It attracted student traders, analysts and risk managers on 45 teams representing 40 universities from across Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and South America. The competition was held in the spirit of the annual in-person competition, which will return for its 18th edition in 2022.

The competition used the resources in the Rotman School’s BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab, including the Rotman Interactive Trader, an order-driven market simulator, which was developed in-house at the Rotman School. The online format allowed the student traders from across the world to connect and engage in a competitive format; as well as to network with sponsors and each other.

“Despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, we were able to successfully hold the competition online thanks to our team’s excellent planning, preparation and delivery, as well as support from colleagues at the Rotman School,” says Prof. Tom McCurdy, the Bonham Chair in International Finance, who is also the academic co-director of the lab with Prof. Craig Geoffrey. “Congratulations to all the teams for their preparation and enthusiastic participation.”

“The event is a testament to the desire for active learning, evidenced by the number of students from all parts of the globe who took time to voluntarily compete, including many hours spent developing their strategies, algorithmic code, and practicing to work as a team,” says Prof. Geoffrey.

The gold sponsor of the competition was BP Canada. Other sponsors included MathWorks and the Rotman Master of Financial Risk Management program.

The Rotman School’s BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab is designed to promote experiential learning: integrating markets, data and research with practice making financial decisions. The competition cases are implemented on the highly acclaimed Rotman Interactive Trader application, a market simulation tool being used in 60 universities and financial institutions around the world. The Lab is utilized by classes in many of the Rotman School’s programs including its Master of Finance, Master of Financial Risk Management, MBA and Rotman Commerce programs.
