Toronto, August 4, 2011 - The director of the Desautels Centre for Integrative Thinking at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management has been appointed the first associate dean of the school's flagship two-year MBA program. Mihnea Moldoveanu, who has been a faculty member at the Rotman School since 1999, will be responsible for the academic structure and content of the program as well as the recruitment of leading candidates for admission and the recruitment of leading firms to the School. Currently he is the Marcel Desautels Professor of Integrative Thinking and a professor of strategic management.
A trans-disciplinary approach to business problem solving called Integrative Thinking lies at the heart of the Rotman MBA curriculum. It draws on models, tools and techniques from multiple disciplines to define, structure, refine, simplify and solve organizational and societal problems. There is a dire need for managers who can use their understanding of existing models and of the phenomena of business to build new models and action maps that are adaptive to existing predicaments; and who can turn this understanding into embodied, and not just theoretical, solutions.
Prof. Moldoveanu’s work has been published in leading journals such as Psychological Review, Management Science, Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal and professional journals such as the Harvard Business Review. He is the author of four books: Inside Man: The Discipline of Modeling Human Ways of Being (Stanford University Press, 2011); Diaminds: Decoding the Mental Habits of Successful Thinkers (with Rotman Dean Roger Martin (University of Toronto Press, 2009); The Future of the MBA: Designing the Thinker of the Future (with Rotman Dean Roger Martin) (Oxford University Press, 2008), and Master Passions: Emotion, Narrative, and the Development of Culture (with Nitin Nohria) (MIT Press, 2002).
He holds a DBA from Harvard University, and MSc and BSc degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In addition to his academic responsibilities, Prof. Moldoveanu has had parallel careers as a high technology entrepreneur and executive. He is the founder of Redline Communications, Inc., one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fourth-generation broadband wireless base stations for fixed and mobile applications and the fastest growing company in central Canada during 2002-2007. During his time with Redline, he served as CEO, and Chief Technological Officer In 2008, Prof. Moldoveanu was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2008 for his contributions to the academic and business worlds.
