At the Datathon

What will happen in the On Campus Datathon?

The Datathon will start with kick off event on the Friday evening, with a panel of industry experts, tech help and a networking reception with industry, judges, faculty, current students and data scientists in residence.

The Datathon itself will start on Saturday morning with participants being given the business challenge. There will coaching available from Rotman faculty and TD Management Data and Analytics Lab (MDAL) research associate and Data Scientists in residence.

Submissions will be due that day. Judging will narrow down the entries to Top 5, and those teams will present at the end of the day, with winners announced afterwards.

Participants are expected to attend both days.

What will happen at the Online Datathon?

Teams will be given access to the online platform a day before the start of the Datathon. Then, at 12pm EST on Thursday October 3, the data and case will be released.

Teams will have a week to work on the case remotely, working with the data and asking questions for our experts and to other teams through the online platform.

Teams will need to submit their presentation of results/solution by 12pm EST on Wednesday October 9. The submissions will be judged on Thursday October 10 and winners will be announced by end of day on Friday October 11. 

Why participate in the Datathon?

It is a chance to test your data analysis skills while having fun. Plus, you will have the opportunity to experience being part of the Rotman School of Management community. You will be networking with industry experts, faculty, Rotman students and other individuals passionate about analytics. Did we mention there are prizes?

Who are the judges?

Rotman Faculty and industry experts will be the judges of the event. In particular, the Academic Director for the Master of Management Analytics will be hosting the event and has compiled a great group of judges, coaches and panelists.

How will submissions be judged?

All entries will be judged by a panel of judges drawn from both Rotman and industry. The judges will use the following criteria:

  • To what extent did your analysis and presentation address the managerial problem that was posed?
  • Are your answers convincing and insightful?
  • Are the results presented effectively and supported by appropriate visualizations and charts?
  • Is the analysis technically correct?

Note that the judging will focus on the presentation you submit. It should be as self-contained as possible. Your accompanying code/ detailed results will only be accessed if needed to check the technical correctness of the analysis.

What analytics technology will be available to the Datathon participants?

For the On Campus Datathon, participants will be given access to the data a week in advance, along with notebooks for specific programming languages and practice questions. It is up to the participants to use whatever system/platform/language they would prefer to work on the data.

For the Online Datathon, participants will have a week to work on the data and can use whatever system/platform/language they would prefer to work on the data. 

What are the prizes for the On Campus Datathon?

Our Datathon is aimed at those interested in studying the Rotman MMA program. Our main prizes are entrance awards for entry to the program in 2020 and break down as follows:

  • 1st Place - $5000 Entrance Award per team member to the MMA Program for August 2020 start, plus Gift Card worth $100, plus application fee waiver for the MMA program ($195 value)
  • 2nd Place - $2000 Entrance Award per team member to the MMA Program for August 2020 start, plus Gift Card worth $50, plus application fee waiver for the MMA program ($195 value)
  • 3rd Place - $500 Entrance Award per team member to the MMA Program for August 2020 start, plus Gift Card worth $25, plus application fee waiver for the MMA program ($195 value)
  • Honorable Mentions – Gift Card, plus application fee waiver for the MMA program ($195 value) 

All entrance award prizes are subject to admission to the MMA program for the August 2020 start date. 

What are the prizes for the Online Datathon?

Registration

Who can attend/register?

We invite any undergraduate, graduate students or young professionals (recent graduates) who are passionate about data to register for the Datathon. Having a quantitative background may be helpful but there are no restrictions regarding experience.

Can I participate if I am currently studying a masters program at Rotman?

Unfortunately, no. This Datathon is not open to current Rotman masters student.

Are you accepting walk-ins?

Due to the limited capacity of the event, we are not able to accept walk-in’s. However, we will run a wait list in case of cancellations.

How much does this cost?

There is no registration cost for this event.

What if I don’t have a team? 

Every participant must register as an individual. A week before the start of the event, you will be asked whether you have other member(s) that you would like to be in the same team with. Every team must consist of 4 or 5 participants. If your team only has 3 participants, we will randomly select and place 2 more participants to be in your team. Rest of the participants will be randomly put into a team.

Do I/we need an idea before registering?

We will be giving you access to the data and challenge, so we do not expect you to have a concept to prepare in advance.

Can I register for both the On Campus and Online Datathons?

No. We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to participate in our Datathons so we are limiting entry to one Datathon per person. Please choose the Datathon best suited to your location/circumstances

Logistics On Campus Datathon

Where is it happening? 

The Datathon will be at the Rotman School of Management, 105 St. George St Toronto. An event schedule with room details will be sent out prior to the event. 

What should I bring?

Please bring your identification, laptop, chargers and a passion for data. 

Do you provide travel or accommodation compensation? 

No, we do not compensate travel expenses or accommodation costs. 

Will there be food? 

Yes. There will be a networking reception on the Friday evening with appetizers. Saturday will have a light breakfast, lunch and snacks. As well, on the University of Toronto campus there are many options for food. Unfortunately, due to the high number of participants, we will not be able to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Will I need to sign an NDA? 

Yes. As the data provided for the competition is real data from an organization, it is necessary to protect the data and only let people work with it who have signed a NDA. With your signature you ensure that you will not use the data for any other purpose, you will not share it and that you will delete it after the Datathon.

Our Datathon is an opportunity to experience Rotman. As such, we expect all participants to act with the same integrity we would expect from our students. All work submitted should be your own.

Logistics online Datathon

Where is it happening? 

The Datathon will be happening online. Communication, questions, resources and more will all happen digitally in our platform that you will be given access to a day ahead of the competition. 

What do I need?

You will need good quality access to a computer with internet access, to download and upload material from the platform. 

Will I need to sign an NDA? 

Yes. As the data provided for the competition is real data from an organization, it is necessary to protect the data and only let people work with it who have signed a NDA. With your signature you ensure that you will not use the data for any other purpose, you will not share it and that you will delete it after the Datathon. 

Our Datathon is an opportunity to experience Rotman. As such, we expect all participants to act with the same integrity we would expect from our students. All work submitted should be your own.
