Accounting: Required Courses

Our Strength: Our Program

Rotman offers PhD level courses specifically created to provide you with the methodological and theoretical training required for exceptional research in the field of Accounting. Required courses are chosen to provide the maximum benefit to your academic development.

Qualifying Requirements and Minor Field Requirements

Accounting research requires mastery of economics, econometrics, finance and, to a lesser extent, other related fields in business administration. To ensure that students are adequately trained to absorb the material in their accounting courses, we require that students take the two first year PhD courses in microeconomics and the two first year PhD courses in econometrics. These two course sequences constitute the two required minor fields. Students are required to pass these courses with a minimum grade of B-, with an A- expectation to maintain full financial support. It is expected that these courses will be completed in the first year in the PhD program.

Major Field Requirements

Accounting PhD students are required to complete four PhD level courses in accounting plus four elective courses normally in the fields of finance, economics or statistics. The elective courses will be chosen in consultation with the accounting PhD coordinator.
