Welcome to the David & Sharon Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation, Rotman’s home for research and resources about boards of directors and corporate governance. The Johnston Centre’s purpose is to support academic research and teaching, generate practical tools & insights and host events that improve the effectiveness of boards of directors. Much of our work will have a special focus on under-served sectors such as family enterprise, both public and private, co-operatives, crown corporations and dual-class public issuers.

Over the next year, the Johnston Centre will launch several new initiatives:

  • An annual research grant to support work on the subject of corporate governance with special preference given to applications focusing on private or family enterprise.
  • A long-term project to codify the risks and effective practices for the mitigation of risk in dual-class structures.
  • A series of video case studies highlighting real-world governance successes representing family businesses, dual-class and other sectors.
  • Regular, specialized closed-door events focusing on governance for family businesses and private companies.

The Johnston Centre will also continue Rotman’s legacy of studying the governance of large public issuers by gathering data and providing insights on trends, such as through the Board Shareholder Confidence Index. Much of this work was previously conduced by the Clarkson Centre, which will continue to operate with an exclusive focus on business ethics.

Keep an eye on this site for regular updates about the Johnston Centre and its work.
