SESSION SUMMARY: In an era of click-bait and information overload, how is a woman supposed to sort through the myriad of pseudo-science claims like vaginal steaming and fake sexual facts about ancient Chinese jade eggs to determine what’s actually good for her health and well-being? Easy, just listen to Dr. Jen Gunter, Twitter’s resident OB/GYN, best-selling author, and host of the popular CBC show Jensplaining. She is on a mission to empower women to make well-informed health care decisions and combat the slew of wellness companies, like GOOP, that feed off the deficiencies in medicine not offering solutions and which often neglect women.

Join us on October 29th for a 1-hour conversation between Dr. Gunter and Sarah Kaplan, Professor of Strategic Management and Director of the Institute for Gender and the Economy at the Rotman School of Management, based on her new best-seller The Vagina Bible: The Vulva and the Vagina-Separating the Myth from the Medicine (Penguin Random House, 2019). They will examine the economics of the wellness industrial complex, discuss how and why Jen is fighting back against wellness influencers exploiting gaps in women’s health, and explore how these businesses profit off misinforming women about what’s supposedly good for their vaginal and sexual health.

BOOK SYNOPSIS: THE VAGINA BIBLE: The Vulva and the Vagina-Separating the Myth from the Medicine (Random House Canada) by Dr. Jen Gunter is a Number 1 bestseller in Canada. It offers a repository of accurate information based on science, and delivered with wit and wisdom. This is the fact-based, inclusive, and empowering guide you deserve to advocate for your own body. As a physician with twenty-five years of clinical experience, Dr. Jen Gunter is all too familiar with the fears, fallacies and misinformation that abound about vaginal health. On Twitter, she hilariously exposes unscientific wellness advice and debunks potentially harmful and stunningly unnecessary products from "vagina profiteers." Dr. Gunter knows the questions women (and men) have about female sexual health, and in THE VAGINA BIBLE, she answers them all.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: DR. JEN GUNTER is a Canadian-American obstetrician and gynecologist with nearly three decades of experience as a vulvar and vaginal diseases expert. She has been called Twitter's resident gynecologist, the Internet's OB/GYN, a fierce advocate for women's health, and has written for many publications. And CBC Gem recently launched a new series hosted by Dr. Gunter called Jensplaining.
