Session Synopsis: Join us for 1-hour panel discussion focusing on the success of the Canadian banking system at the time of the 150th anniversary of the Bank Act of 1871.

About Our Speakers:

Nick Le Pan was Superintendent of Financial Institutions for Canada from 2001 to 2006 and led the OSFI Supervision Sector, including the supervision programs for banks and other deposit-taking institutions from 1997 to 2000. He is past chair of the Canadian Public Accountability Board, which regulates auditors of public companies. Mr. Le Pan has been involved in various international and Canadian regulatory coordination efforts, including as Chairman of the Basel Accord Implementation Group and Vice-Chairman of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. He was actively involved in Group of Thirty reports, making recommendations on a new paradigm for relations between bank supervisors and boards enhancing oversight of risk culture and enhancing culture and conduct in systemically important banks. Mr. Le Pan is a member of Oliver Wyman’s North American Financial Services Senior Advisory Board and Chairs the C.D. Howe Institute Financial Services Research Initiative.

Joe Martin spent most of this career with what is now Deloitte Consulting [29 years] and the Faculty of Management @ the Rotman School, University of Toronto [25 years]. At Deloitte he became Partner in Charge for Canada [1978 – 1990] then Chair of their Global Consulting Committee [1990 – 1995].  In addition to his management role he served clients and the profession, serving as President of the Institute of Management Consultants of Ontario and then President of the Canadian Association of Management Consultants. Initially at Rotman he was Adjunct Professor and Executive in Residence where he focused on teaching, designing, developing and delivering the first course in Management Consulting in Ontario and serving as Faculty Advisor to Impact Consulting. The consequences of the dot.com boom inspired him to be the founder of the first Canadian Business History course for a School of Management. His most recent book is From Wall Street to Bay Street; The Origins and Evolution of American and Canadian Finance. He is the founder and current President of the Canadian Business History Association, President Emeritus of Canada’s History Society, Historian of the Albany Club of Toronto, former Treasurer of the Ontario History Society and Past President of the Manitoba Historical Society.

Richard Nesbitt is CEO of Global Risk Institute in Financial Services, which is building a globally recognized research organization in the management of emerging risks. Richard is also a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics, United Kingdom, an Adjunct Professor of the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and chair of the Advisory Board of the Mind Brain Behavior Hive at the same University. In 2017, Richard published a book (with Barbara Annis) titled Results at the Top on the issue of men’s responsibility for gender diversity to improve their organizations (Wiley 2017). Richard was Chief Operating Officer of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce until he retired from that position in September 2014. He joined CIBC in 2008 following his more than 20 years of experience in the securities industry which included CIBC Wood Gundy from 1987 to 1997

Mona Zhang is a Portfolio Manager at Mackenzie Investments on their award-winning Global Equity & Income Fund managing over $14 billion. She is also a guest lecturer at the Rotman School of Management, teaching an investing course for the School's Executive Program. In addition, Mona sits on the board of Educating Girls of Rural China, a Canadian-registered charity dedicated to empowering financially challenged girls and young women from rural areas in China.
