Rotman ESG Designation
Align business models with responsible practices and earn your ESG.D designation. In partnership with the Lee-Chin Institute.
Environment, social, and governance practices – or ESG – have moved from a sideline concern to a central driver of business today. Investors, communities and governments are demanding attention and transparency around performance and strategy on ESG issues which now define the new business landscape. To meet this demand and transform your organization from within, you need high-quality ESG training.
Rotman’s ESG designation is designed for professionals seeking a thorough understanding of how to align business models with responsible practices to unlock innovation opportunities, mitigate risk, meet rising standards for accountability and transparency, and to ensure long-term organizational performance.
This hybrid program delivers more than hands-on, high-quality learning. It is also a pathway towards earning your Rotman ESG designation (ESG.D), granted by the Rotman School of Management. This designation represents your lifelong commitment to excellence and demonstrates to employers and clients that you understand how to build ESG considerations into sound business strategies.
To earn your ESG designation, you must complete
- all in-person sessions,
- all half-day online modules
- a capstone project and
- a designation exam.
The capstone project ensures you have fully synthesized key learnings and applied them to a real business case. The exam certifies that you have also achieved the desired bar of applied knowledge.
Rotman Executive Program faculty are known for their ability to translate the latest research into practical applications for the workplace, and to transmit skills to participants with the best teaching techniques. Industry leaders contribute to our programs to bring you the most up-to-date best practices and a wealth of real-world experience.

Earning and Maintaining Your Designation
Capstone Project
In addition to core program curriculum, you will work on a capstone project that ties key learnings from the program to a real business case guided by program faculty. This will allow you to apply your learnings to a live challenge and demonstrate mastery of the key concepts.
Designation Exam
After completing the ESG Program, you will become eligible to write the designation exam. Upon passing the exam, you earn the Rotman ESG Designation (ESG.D). The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions.
You must achieve a minimum score of 70% overall to earn the Rotman ESG Designation (ESG.D). You may write the exam up to two times/year over a two-year period following completion of the Program for a fee of $250 plus taxes for each seating. Your first sitting of the exam and your first year of membership in the designation are included in your program fee. After the two-year period, you would be required to retake the program in order to qualify for further attempts at the exam.
Once you have successfully completed all program elements, including the course content, passing the exam, and completing the capstone project, you will be granted the ESG designation.
Using the Designation
Upon successfully completing your examination, ESG.D can accompany your name in official biographies, on business cards and in email signatures.
Maintaining Your Designation
To ensure holders of the Rotman ESG Designation stay up to date in their field, retaining status as a designation holder will require a commitment to the following:
- Complete a minimum of 10 relevant continuing education units (CEUs) annually
- Submit a report of your activities to Rotman along with $200 CAD to maintain your ESG designation
The following are the broad categories of activities that will be considered for CEUs:
