Toronto – A student and a recent graduate from the Rotman Commerce program at the University of Toronto participated in the annual Youth Leadership Finance Summit at Shanghai Jiao Tong University taking home a top prize for their presentation on small and medium enterprise finance in China.
Freddy Tang, BCom’17, and Christopher Morello, BCom’16, joined forces with two students from Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania to win one of four first prizes of $1500 USD and CFA scholarships.
A total of 21 teams with students from 26 universities around the world participated in the weekend long Summit which took place in August which provided students with educational, professional, networking and cultural experiences in Shanghai, which culminated in the presentations on four different topic areas. The competition was hosted by the he Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) Master of Finance (MF) program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
"It was a privilege to be admitted to this summit amongst the top university students across China and the world. Each team brought forward intellectually stimulating presentations surrounding finance issues and opportunities in China, which gave me many new perspectives on the region. My year in the Rotman School’s Creative Destruction Lab working amongst top international investors gave me an in-depth understanding of SME Finance, and my two exchanges at Fudan University and the University of Hong Kong allowed me to apply these learnings in a China specific context,” says Christopher Morello.
"It was the experience of a lifetime to meet so many outstanding students from across Asia and North America. I was humbled to be part of a winning team given the quality of every other presentation. I would like to thank Prof. Laura Doering and lecturer William Huggins for teaching me social entrepreneurship and Chinese finance, respectively. These topics were crucial to our performance in the summit,” says Freddy Tang.
Another two students from the Rotman Commerce program also participated in the summit.
