New Chair Holder and Faculty Research Award Recipients Announced by University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management

October 24, 2023

Toronto – Claire Tsai, a professor of marketing at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, has been named as the new holder of the School’s Corus Entertainment Chair in Communication Strategy.

In her research Prof. Tsai adopts a behavioral economics approach in studying decision-making in areas including marketing, competition, financial decisions, food consumption, subjective well-being, risk, uncertainty, and overconfidence bias. Her work appears in leading marketing and psychology journals, and often receives featured coverage in popular media outlets.   To strengthen the training for doctoral students at Rotman, she founded the CREATe lab that explores inter-disciplinary research in marketing, psychology, economics, and management.

Rhia Catapano, an assistant professor of marketing, and Rachel Ruttan, an assistant professor of organizational behaviour and human resource management are the 2023 co-winners of the Petro-Canada Young Innovators Award. This award at the Rotman School recognizes the academic achievements and success in publishing innovative, cutting-edge work on business, economics, and management by junior faculty members.

Prof. Catapano’s research explores how consumer psychology can be leveraged to benefit society. In one stream, she examines how people can be shifted away from entrenched views, and factors that affect receptiveness to the opposition. In another research stream, she explores the role of meaning in consumer satisfaction and decision-making. Her research has been published in leading journals.

Prof. Ruttan’s research interests include compassion and prosocial behavior, values, and moral judgment. Specifically, she studies lapses in interpersonal compassion, as well as the potential pitfalls of organizations' attempts to appeal to morals and values, showing when and how "doing well by doing good" can backfire. Her research has been published in leading journals.
