Former CEO, Mackenzie Investments
Mr. McInerney was raised and educated in Canada and is a dual citizen of Canada and the United States, spending equal time over his 35-year career working and living in both countries. For the past 25 years, Mr. McInerney led Canadian, US and global investment companies based in New York, Chicago, and Toronto.
In June of 2022, Mr. McInerney retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mackenzie Investments. During his six-year tenure, Mr. McInerney more than tripled assets under management, doubled earnings, experienced record sales, and revitalized the culture, diversity, and purpose of Mackenzie Investments with a modern, future-oriented business model and leadership style.
Recent awards include the CEO of the Year in 2020 by Wealth Professional, the number one ranking of CEOs in Canada in 2021 by Glassdoor, and the Alway Award in 2022 from St. Michael’s College (University of Toronto) in recognition of demonstrating the highest character in contributing to society through personal, professional, and spiritual leadership.
Prior to joining Mackenzie Investments, Mr. McInerney was Co-Chief Executive Officer of BMO Global Asset Management, responsible for BMO’s asset management businesses in the United States, Europe, Middle East, and Asia Pacific. These businesses grew ten-fold via organic growth and several significant acquisitions during his seven years of leadership.
Prior to BMO, Mr. McInerney was the Managing Director for Russell Investments’ institutional asset management business in the US and Canada, and Russell’s global consulting business. He also served as a member of Russell’s Global Management Committee and the Russell Trust Company Board.
Mr. McInerney began his career at Mercer Inc. where he held a number of senior leadership positions including founding President of Mercer Global Investments in the U.S. and globally, President & Chairman of the Mercer Trust Company, and President of Mercer Investment Consulting in the U.S. and Canada.
Mr. McInerney is a graduate of the Master of Business Administration and the Bachelor of Commerce programs at the University of Toronto – Rotman School of Management. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) designations.
Mr. McInerney serves on the Rotman School of Management’s Dean’s Advisory Board (Toronto, Canada) and is a past member of the Boards of China Asset Management Co., Ltd. (Beijing, China), Northleaf Capital Partners (Toronto, Canada), St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation (Toronto, Canada), Black North Initiative (Toronto, Canada), Alpine Canada (Calgary, Canada), Heartland Alliance (Chicago, USA), Roosevelt University (Chicago, USA), Children Home and Aid (Chicago, USA) and The Investment Company Institute (ICI) (Washington, DC, USA).
Mr. McInerney is a frequent speaker on the topics of investment, demographic, and geo-economic and capital market trends.
