Small- and Medium-sized Enterprise Board Effectiveness Program

Educate your board. Grow your business.

3-day intensive course
Dates: April 1–3, 2014
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Participant profile: directors, senior executives and entrepreneurs
Fee: $3,950 CAD + HST

Overview

Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are key drivers of economic growth in our economy. Boards of early stage growth companies can contribute enormously to the growth and success of these businesses, but only if both directors and senior management of the firms understand and implement effective governance practices. The Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Board Effectiveness Program focuses on developing a toolkit for business success:  practical knowledge and skills that enhance governance effectiveness. The program provides a hands-on framework for directors, entrepreneurs and advisory board members to explore governance issues unique to leading growth, and acquire the necessary knowledge to support Enterprise development at various stages.

Who Should Attend

The program is intended for participants who affect and are involved in small and medium enterprise governance–accountable for growth, sustainability and the well-being of an organization. Past participants have included directors, executives and entrepreneurs from public, private and not-for-profit boards/organizations.  Individuals who are likely to assume corporate board positions in the near future will also benefit.

Key Benefits

  • explore the unique challenges in governing small and medium enterprises
  • effectively communicate and collaborate with various stakeholder groups
  • build and strengthen decision-making processes
  • increase transparency and clarity of roles between management and Board members
  • understand fiduciary roles and responsibilities
  • add value to corporate strategy through an appreciation of the appropriate roles of management and board directors in the strategy process

This program is hands-on, practical and focused on concrete learning and skill development which is immediately applicable in the boardroom. Participants come away with enhanced knowledge and understanding of how to make their boards more effective and their companies more successful.

Executives in Residence

In addition to session facilitators, some of Canada’s leading Corporate Directors will also participate in the SME program as Executives in Residence. Participants will learn directly from their expertise and experiences in the boardroom and have the opportunity to engage with them in small group discussions. Executives also share methods which can be employed by small- and medium-sized companies to enhance the quality of their governance.

The wealth of diversity in the classroom creates a rich and dynamic environment which lends itself to an exceptional learning experience.

This program has been approved for 19.5 continuing professional development hours under section A of the Continuing Professional Development log of the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA™).
