Management Data Lab (MDL)

The Management Data Lab promotes cutting-edge analytic tools in business through teaching and research, and will be a central source of knowledge and expertise in data science, AI, and machine learning applications.

The field of management analytics is evolving at a rapid pace. Along with machine learning and artificial intelligence, the recent growth of big data is creating a revolution in research methods, allowing scholars and practitioners to solve ever-more complex business challenges.

As part of its mission to become a leader in the teaching and application of big data, the School has established the Management Data Lab. A one-of-a-kind interface that facilitates the assembling, storage and management of big data, the lab empowers its users to create and manage new data sets, and derive actionable insights from them using new programming languages and analytic tools.

The lab draws upon data from both private and public sources for research and classroom activities. It is an invaluable resource to students and researchers at Rotman, as well as to members of the broader academic and business communities.

The mission of the Management Data Lab is multi-faceted and aims to:

Manage an analytics cluster, providing the computing infrastructure needed for robust and accurate data management
Provide a resource for students and faculty as they apply AI and machine learning tools to complex management issues
Spur the development of in-house expertise and academic materials, and ensure coverage of the most critical issues in analytics based on the input of its data scientists in residence
Bring together industry and academic expertise through the development of programming workshops and speaker series on topics at the forefront of applications of AI and machine learning in industry
