Rotman MBAs Win Design Challenge and Real Estate Competition.

March 11, 2014

Toronto – Teams of MBA students from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management were the winners of two different competitions held at business schools in recent weeks in Toronto.

On March 8 and 9, the Rotman School hosted the annual Rotman Design Challenge which brings together top talent from leading business and design schools around the world to solve a business design challenge which was posed this year by sponsor Target.

Teams from UofT competed against teams from IIT - Illinois Institute of Design, MIT’s Sloan School of Management, OCAD University, Copenhagen Business School and the Kellogg School of Management, among others. The U.S. retail chain Target challenged students to try and see what retail will look like in 50 years and how will Target stay relevant.

Teams from the Rotman School took the top two places in the competition with a team from MIT Sloan placing third.

Placing first was Revolution, a team composed of students from the Rotman School’s MBA programs as well as from UofT’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture. Team members included Stef Geiger, MBA’15; Christine Kim, MArch’14; Jennifer Lee, Evening MBA’16, Bhuvan Shrivastava, MBA’15; and Justin Stepanowicz, Evening MBA’16.

Coming in at second was Kids of Empathy with members Chelsea Omel, MBA’15; Dave Barreca, MBA’15; Jake Cassaday, MBA’15; Jane Park, MBA’15; and, Kristin Quinn, MBA’15.

Earlier a team of Rotman MBA students defeated eleven other teams including teams from the Shulich School of Business, Columbia Business School and Queen’s University to win the Developers’ Den competition at the Schulich School of Business. This annual competition is for students interested in the real estate and architect industries. This year the teams faced a real-world development problem posed to them by the YMCA of Greater Toronto. The team of Evo Genche, MBA’15; Joseph Kallis, JD/MBA’15; Ayeesha Lalji, JD/MBA’16; and Michael Parsons, Morning MBA’16, took home the first prize of $3,000 in the competition which was held on February 28.
