Centre for Innovation in Accounting Education


The Center is directed by two Co-Directors:

Irene Wiecek FCPA, FCA

Joan A. Kitunen, FCPA, FCA, is a member of CPA Canada and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario.  She is a member of the Accounting Faculty and a Teaching Fellow of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.  She designs, coordinates and teaches taxation courses offered in the Accounting Specialist program in the B.Com, and in the MMPA (Master of Management and Professional Accounting) program.  She has been the recipient of numerous Rotman Excellence in Teaching Awards including the Roger Martin Award.  As well, in 2012, she received the CICA Award for Excellence in Income Tax Practice and Education for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession and the Canadian Tax Community.    

Kitunen is Co-lead author for the design and development of curriculum and supporting materials for the Elective Module in Taxation, forming part of the new CPA Professional Education Program.  She is co-author of the text entitled Canadian Income Taxation, Planning and Decision Making, by Buckwold and Kitunen; Co-Director of the CPA/Rotman Centre for Innovation in Accounting Education (2004 – present); and Coordinator of the taxation segment of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario) School of Accountancy (1999 – 2014).  She was a member of the CICA Tax Courses Committee (2003 – 2012), and a member of the CICA Tax Education Task Force (2008 – 2013).   Prior to joining the Faculty at the University of Toronto, Kitunen was a Tax Partner at Deloitte.

Irene M. Wiecek, FCPA, FCA, is cross appointed to the Rotman School of Management and has taught in numerous graduate and undergraduate programs at Rotman and the University of Toronto, Mississauga including the Accounting Specialist Program (Commerce), the Master of Management & Professional Accounting Program (MMPA), the MBA Program, Executive MBA Program and the Master of Management of Innovation. She is the Associate Director of the MMPA Program and past Academic Director of the Accounting Specialist Program. In the area of professional accounting education, Irene is the Director of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (CICA) IFRS Immersion Programs and past Director of the CICA In-depth GAAP Programs. She is involved with the accounting profession, developing case/program material in various programs for pre and post certification Chartered Accountants. Irene is the Canadian co-author of the first fully integrated International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) text Intermediate Accounting (Wiley, 2010) and the IFRS Primer: International GAAP Basics (Wiley 2009 - Canadian edition and 2010 U.S. edition). She has served on numerous CICA committees including the Qualifications Committee and the CICA Financial Reporting and Governance Committee. Irene was appointed to the E&Y Academic Resource Centre, and was part of a team that created an IFRS curriculum for North American academics. Her area of expertise includes IFRS and accounting education and she speaks at conferences across North America. Currently she has partnered with the CICA to take a look at accounting education in general. Together they are working on the “New Pillars of Accounting Education Initiative”.

Irene is currently Co-Director of the CPA/Rotman Centre for Innovation in Accounting Education. She helped establish the Centre in 2001.
