Chrys: My MFRM Journey - Project Sponsor Meet & Greet

Being part of the Master of Financial Risk Management (MFRM) program at UofT has been nothing short of enlightening. A standout experience within this journey has to be the Project Sponsor Meet & Greet event mid-October. Here's a firsthand look into my experiences at both the in-person and virtual sessions.

In-Person Meet & Greet

Walking into the Desautels Hall on October 19th, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation. The excitement was evident in the poised demeanor of my peers, all impeccably dressed in business attire, their name badges gleaming with pride. Strategically placed throughout the room, high-top tables stood as beacons for each sponsor.

Approaching the tables, I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and openness of the project sponsors. There were managers and directors from major Canadian banks like RBC and Scotiabank. They dove deep into the intricacies of their projects, sharing snippets that aren't available in brochures. The discussions at the Deloitte and EY tables gave me insights into not only the projects but also the everyday life of a risk management professional. Sustainable finance enthusiasts like me were treated to engaging narratives on climate risk and ESG. Moreover, completing the BINGO card while networking felt like a fun scavenger hunt, ensuring we connected with a broad spectrum of industry leaders.

International Opportunities

The virtual session on the following day presented a contrasting, yet equally enriching experience. Connecting from the comfort of my home, I was able to speak to project sponsors from across the globe like in Dubai and Hong Kong. The structure was streamlined: every sponsor had a 15 minute window, evenly split between presentation and Q&A.

The presentation from Abu Dhabi Investment Authority on microeconomics in shipping and freight was very fascinating. It showcased how traditional economic principles are seamlessly interwoven with contemporary financial challenges. OPTrust stirred my tech-savvy side by delving into the integration of AI in risk management. Meanwhile, the CMCC Global, one of Asia’s first venture capital companies focused solely on blockchain investments, dives deep into the crypto space with their dashboard project.

Key Takeaways

Above all, this Meet & Greet reinforced the value of the MFRM program. This journey isn't limited to the confines of textbooks or the pressure of exams. It’s about understanding real-world challenges and preparing ourselves to tackle them head-on. The bridge between academic learning and industry application is precisely what this event encapsulated. Furthermore, it became evident that mastering technical skills in Python and machine learning, paired with an analytical mindset, is paramount in today's risk management landscape. As I reflect, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for this enlightening experience and the bubbling enthusiasm for the upcoming project.
