Corporate Board Ratings

The David & Sharon Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation produces a series of board ratings, focusing on three key areas: Board Shareholder Confidence Index, The Long View, and Corporate Governance in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. Learn more below.

Board Shareholder Confidence Index

CCBE has been compiling the Board Shareholder Confidence Index since 2002, considering corporations listed on the S&P/TSX Composite Index in regards to their director independence, board structure and board output. The BSCI has come to set the standard for Canadian corporate governance practices, and improved scores over time indicate remarkable progress towards best practices.

The Clarkson Centre's work on the Board Shareholder Confidence Index is made possible with the support of Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.

The Long View

Canadian family firms have been among the country's best performers for decades.  In the meantime, they remain second-class citizens in most conversations about corporate governance.  The Long View is a set of board ratings for family firms that is free from this negative bias.

Corporate Governance in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

In 2007, CCBE began analysing the corporate governance practices in a random set of companies on the TSX with market capitalization less than $500 million.  Through interviews with directors, executives and investors, CCBE developed a scoring criteria that is designed to measure some of the specific governance challenges faced by Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises.

The following document outlines the scoring methodology used:
