Quick Info

Why did you decide to study the Master of Financial Risk Management program?

MFRM is a quantitative Master program offered at the top business school in Canada. It places a strong emphasis on case-oriented programming and modelling training, which provides opportunities to develop the gaps in the needed skillset of financial risk management. Along with the risk management project, its well-tailored development path can help fulfill my academic and professional pursuits. The program is also renowned for diversity in students from different backgrounds, which equip me with the advantage of establishing industrial networks and learning keen insights into risk management.

What were your top reasons for choosing Rotman?

Rotman has renowned faculty and a great reputation within the industry. This top 1 business school in Canada is committed to helping students achieve their career goals by providing networking opportunities, outstanding campus resources and career support.

What are you looking forward to most in the program?

The most exciting thing that I look forward to in the program is the programming training and data analytics. The 2-month risk management project requires students to utilize quantitative analysis skills to tackle real-world business issues, so I will have opportunities to improve my technical skills practically.

What do you expect to gain in your next 10 months at Rotman?

I believe quantitative analysis skills, especially Python, will be valuable assets for my future career. The investment strategies and risk management methods that I learned from real-world cases will strengthen my understanding of the status quo of the industry in both Canada and across the world. Furthermore, the heavy workload and coding-basis learning in 10 months are quite challenging. I believe my time management skills will be improved, and I will better understand how to collaborate with the team.

How have you found the online experience at Rotman?

To a certain extent, online classes limit the possibilities of interaction among students and increase the difficulty of group collaboration. Still, MFRM and Rotman have made great efforts to maintain the same pedagogical quality and provide networking opportunities as before. Although sometimes there are technical issues with the Bb Collaborate, the effectiveness of the online courses has exceeded my expectations. Since every lesson will be recorded, we will have the opportunity to re-watch the recordings and review the contents.

Did COVID-19 make you re-consider your decision to study this year, and if so, what made you decide to continue?

My decision to pursuing a master’s degree is not a sudden impulse, so the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t change my mind this year. On the contrary, I believe this is a tough year for new graduates to find ideal job positions; thus, continuous studying might be a better option during this period.

The Master of Financial Risk Management is a full-time program designed to prepare ambitious young professionals for careers in risk management and finance.
